Lines of Communication stretch from the Rear Maintenance Area, where the port and bases are located, to the Advanced Base, which is just behind the operational zone. There was little need for a Line of Communication organisation in Normandy since the Rear Maintenance area and the operational zone were adjacent. With the advance into Belgium the organisation was developed with - HQ Line of Communication at Rombaix - 12 Line of Communication Area responsible for areas in France. HQ was at Arras. - 11 Line of Communication Area responsible for areas in Belgium. HQ was at Malines. In early 1945 the port of Antwerp was opened and the following changes made - HQ Line of Communication at Brussels - 12 Line of Communication Area leapfrogged into Holland - Rear Maintenance Area closed down and the Advanced Base in Belgium took over. By the end of January 1945 almost all units were in Belgium or Holland and the remaining units in France were administered by one Line of Communication Sub Area. It was large enough to cope with the flow of supplies, equipment and personnel, and was as close to the front line as was practicable. When it was first occupied Antwerp could not be used as a port because the approaches were still controlled by the enemy. It could however be used as an Advanced Base. Reconnaissance parties from many units found suitable accommodation for stores and offices and sites found for sub depots. The buildings required little or no work and there was no shortage of labour keen to work for the British Army. A free midday meal was a great incentive to people who had eaten badly for some years. Thus by the time the port was opened there was already a large number of military and civil staff and large areas of storage space ready for use.
