I am re-reading this work by the American author Rick Atkinson. It deals mainly with the US Army in North Africa (Vol 1), Italy (Vol2) and NW Europe (Vol3), but does not neglect the Commonwealth and France. I found the account of the sometimes strained relationships of Montgomery, Patton and Eisenhower of particular interest., The author has an easy to read style and tends to elaborate accounts of operations with personal details of individuals which are, like much of the work, unsupported by references. The final volume was published in 2013.

I've read the first book and I think the second as well. It is well done, I think.

Shame about the lack of references but I think this is not uncommon for popular histories. I'm currently reading Delaforce's The Battle of the Bulge and it's similar.

I haven't read them, but the National WW2 Museum (U.S.) has some excellent lectures from him on its YouTube channel and I believe I've watched them all.

He seems very personable and although it tends toward the strategic view 'from the top' (political and military) and general vs general politics, he still manages a good range of perspectives and does get into some discussion of logistics, tactics and materiel.

Indeed, they are 'top down' but provide a good perspective.
