    Hi,
I am looking for any information on the units that liberated Beaurains/Arras in early September 1944. My wife's grand father (H. Sorton) served in the Argyll and Sunderland Highlanders that landed in Normandy a few days after D-day.
If his regiment had liberated or passed through the village where I grew up i.e. Beaurains nr Arras, it would be an amazing coincidence.
Any help would be gladly welcomed.

    Best,
    Xavier

    Bonjour Xavier,

Have you spoken to M. Andre COILLIOT in Beaurains? He will probably be able to tell you.

Thank you. This is very very useful.
    His unit was:
WO 171/1262 2 Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's)

Does Andre Coillot have an email adress. Btw, I visited his museum with my school (about 300 yds down the road) when I was 10..about 30 yrs ago!

Do you know if I stand a chance to find out more. Maybe some photos. It would be amazing.

There will be infomation in the units war diary like, where they were on a day to day basis and what the unit was doing etc.

The files are held at the National Archives and London. You can view and copy the files by visiting the Archives. They are not available online.

Brilliant. Thank you. I will order a copy of the diary. I searched the forum for photos and other information. It seems 2nd Argyll fought on the river Seine and were relieved before fighting again on the Rhine and in Holland.
Does anybody where to start to get more?

    Xavier
