I do not like to complain (well I do really) but I live 600 foot up in the Pennine foothills and I should have snow. The news is full of closed motorways, closed airports, power lines down, people stranded and I have not seen a snowflake all week. Mike.
Plenty of snow at Christmastime 2017 in Cumbria, mainly on the higher fells but some on the Lakeland passes and roads. Attached thumbnail (taken 27 December 2017) shows Keswick Tennis courts and Cricket pavilion clear of snow but with plenty on the Skiddaw massif beyond. So you could play tennis on one of the courts in the morning and then tobogganing on Skiddaw in the afternoon. Generally speaking, we tend to cope with snow and ice in Cumbria although sometimes it causes problems on the roads. It is also important to be respectful of the snow and ice conditions which can have increased dangers.
Mike The good news is its on the way to you 15cm. The bad news is I'm crap at weather forecasting. Graham.
I am impressed. Thank you Graham for forecasting snow and TD for actually sending it. I am watching it fall steadily now. I suppose I will have to send 'her indoors' for the paper. Watching it is fun but going out in it is different. Exactly thirty years ago I was in Leningrad, as it still was. Plenty of snow but I had sheepskin coat, sheepskin hat, sheepskin boots and sheepskin gloves. Mike
I didn't like to say anything yesterday Mike but "you spoke too soon" - that'll learn yer . Here in East Yorkshire nowt much, plenty of rain but just occasional little fluffy bits falling. Lesley
The weathermen are throwing numbers out around 20F (-6C) for us in Alabama in the coming days. Wee bit chilly for us, but is better than the 10F (-12C) they were originally threatening us with. The "wintery mix" of precipitation accompanying the cold should be confined to the northern part of the state. But then, there was snow on the ground over most of the state on Dec 9. I'm well past half a century in age and I don't recall it ever snowing that early here.
I bet your houses aren't built with an expectation of that really cold weather. That can really be awful. I'm from and living in Ontario, but my coldest experience of winter was actually in Yokohama, Japan one year - no insulation in my little apartment and just two electric heaters to keep warm.
January 1st, 2018 -11C and a wind chill of -21C The annual Canadian Polar Bear Barbecue On the menu: steak, salmon, lobster and zucchini On the positive side, the beer stays very cold. Having a light on your toque: Priceless
They are built in anticipation of hot summers and are well insulated to that regard. Our larger issue is that we have a heat pump and it does not heat as well as I would like. We do have a gas logs in fireplace that will run us out of the room if we don't turn them off NOOOO! That crap is great to visit. I don't want to live in it. Snowmageddon or tornadoes? I'll take the spinning wind.
I wish we could have some of this snow stuff you talk about. We have severe water restrictions because of the drought. At the moment we are only allowed 87 litres per person per day.
It's too cold to snow. -23C and 20km winds today. I used to think that people who escaped to Florida for the winter were being un-Canadian but age does alter your perspective.
