I was meant to go to a firm in Hook, Hampshire but as weather was so bad at Reading I turned back at Junction 11.
Was doing 10 mph on the M4, motorway was a white out, couldn't see the road markings.
I hear Basingstoke is grid-locked, M25 is a car-park , M3 is solid from London to Basingstoke because of the snow.

    gorgeous

well it went up to 43F and dropped like a stone here she comes all white, the grey ghost clouds are descending on the hills of 4500 feet and coming this way, and good sharp crisp and cold north wind right up your arse is a great indicator of something to come .............

Wish I had a DSLR with a macro lens.
This is the frost on the playhouse roof, reminds me of an endless Siberian forst in miniature.

Took these yesterday morning in the back yard before the wind got up and blew the fine powder off of the branches.

    Phil,
That much snow in the UK would bring us place to a grinding halt.
Does it cause any problems over there?

It sure boosts sales of snow blowers and shovels. Other than that, it is the norm for us. Actually, this stuff was beautiful as snow goes. It was light and fluffy and with no wind as it fell, you ended up with this sort of build up. I stood at the window watching the squirrels run between trees with snow falling as they ran along the branches. It was quite lovely.

When it gets problematic is when the snow is heavy and wet. That's heart attack city waiting to happen if you are on the end of a shovel. I have a good snow blower and can manage our small driveway well.

Here's one that really does the job!

That snow blower looks fun, what engine is that?
I can imagine some loons adding seats & steering wheels & going racing with them.

It is a V8 engine. There is set of plans to build your own out there in cyber space. Most are not as souped up as this model.

What I find most amusing are those who go in for grass drag racing on snowmobiles.

    Are we having fun yet?

We have had about 10 inches of snow over the last 4 days her in Spandau, which is great for the children, but not much fun clearing the drive way and getting about on the side roads.

    Regards

I will take snow any day over this coldest day in a long time. It was -24C when I got up at 4:00 a.m. and it presently -18C and heading back to -24C tonight.

Mind you, when I lived in Western Canada, -25C as a daytime high was positively warm.... when compared to -40 and wind chill.

Tom, you are about 6 degrees of latitude further north than I am, about 420 miles or so, and I would think you are a little warmer all in all. Snow is the reality for us in the Northern part of the northern hemisphere.

Just think, Spidge is probably at the beach....

    cheers,

    phil

My garden is like a mud bath - soaking when the minor thraw hits , when it freezes it returns to its block of ice state - like that which haunted the 1960-70's football fixture list. "Ballet on Ice" at Maine Road !!

I look at it and think of "TWAW" - Barbarossa - "now the tanks could move again".

Minus 9 - I can believe it worst here was minus 14.

"Frozen foot / frozen meat" medals for one and all.

My son has written his car off ( I fear) - slid on ice , the thraw and the freeze syndrome so I have had it with the "I am Dreaming of a White Christmas" thing .

Tom , keep shovelling that snow when you get it built up I want to see your K-98 and a line of stick grenades ready as you reenact the line before Moscow or the defence of Berlin in 45.

Take care on the roads Andy and safe home.

James S, the car smashes in this weather is very easy to do. I Drove from Oxford to Norwich in horrible weather yesterday with no probs. Try to park on my street, hit a patch of black ice and only manage to stop inches away from a persons garden wall. Needless to say the car is now parked and staying there till it thaws!!
