Hello Alex and welcome to the forum. The first thing we suggest to forum members is to apply for his service records from the MOD in Glasgow. This is the ONLY place you will get them. They take about 3-5 weeks; when you receive them you will have a much clearer picture of what he did and members will be able to help much more. Get a copy of military service records Lesley
on enlistment shows he joined Northamptonshire Regiment" http://www.corpsofmilitarypolice.org/tools/armynumber?query=5892792
Hi Alex, Good to hear from you. Quick search in my airborne books confirms your family history. Ref 1 : The Devils Own Luck by Denis Edwards (he was also 2nd Ox & Bucks present on D-day coup-de-main operation to capture the bridges) shows Pte Peverill present in Glider no. 6 at Orne River Bridge piloted by S/Sgts Howard and Baacke of the Glider Pilot Regiment under command of Lt. Fox. Twenty of the troops on board (including Peverill) were members of 27 Platoon, B Company, 2nd Ox&Bucks with a medic and five Royal Engineers also. Additionally, Denis states that "Glider Number 6 landed on schedule, close to the river bridge". Ref 2 : Gliderborne - The Story of the 2nd Battalion The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (The 52nd) in World war II "Chalk No 96 [27 Platoon] Lt. Fox. Flew 5000-6000 feet. Released at 5700 feet correct point above broken cloud. Landed in correct place in LZ 'Y' close by the bridge with broken nose wheel. Field was full of cows. Lt. Fox and his platoon attacked the bridge and took it with little opposition. Howard and Baacke assisted in unloading of gliders, helping casualties to RAP [Regimental Aid Post]. A sniper was covering the road between the bridges for most of D-day and was very difficult to dislodge. During the approach could not get speed below 90mph - sent two men into back of glider and speed was OK at 80. Used parachute but speed was too slow to make it effective. Ref 3 : ancestry,co,uk website : Award of General Service Medal for service in Palestine 1945-1948 records Pte l.V. Peverill (5392792) of 2OBLI awarded this service medal. As others have said, obtaining his service record would open up a wealth of information as, although we can follow the 2nd Ox & Bucks from D-day and the Normandy break-out, a small section during the Battle of Arnhem and then the rush to the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge and the subsequent move to Holland during the holding action on the River Maas. The later heavy action of the regiment whilst taking part in Operation Varsity, the push into Germany and the rush for Wismar and the post-war deployment to Palestine it is only the service record which can place an individual at these places. Good luck with your search and I'm sure that plenty more information will flow from others more savvy than me on this forum. Cheers Dave .
