hi all im new to this site so please be gentle :D wondered if someone might provide me so info while clearing my mums attic (sadly passed) i came across a tin with medals, ration books ,letters, postcards and other bits n bobs obviously my dads ( long since passed) in a wallet was a leaflet folded in quite dodgy condition and i wondered if anyone knows what it was . its in french on one side and what looks like arabic on the other, the bold type at the top says ( using my pidgeon french) " a message of the commander in chiefs of the allied forces in north africa tunisia " signed at the bottem by henry giraud and dwight d eisenhower any info on this would be great as i would love to mount in a frame and tell people what it is . thx

Sounds like one of the propaganda leaflets dropped over North Africa by the Allies at the start of Operation Torch. Does it have a little code number in one of the bottom corners like "T.1"?

A scan would be nicer :)

It sounds as though it is a document issued to troops during the Torch landings to explain their presence to the locals - it would help if you could scan it and post it on this thread.

Welcome to the forum - Steven

I feel a little embarrassed that I didn't post that link myself - seeing that I'm Editor of Falling Leaf - the quarterly journal of the PsyWar Society - and the Society's webmaster.

I thought that Operation Torch was the US/French Landings in Morrocco, with the Brits landing in Algeria. The document indicates Tunisia as being the subject matter.
So it is a propaganda leaflet to do with US/French incursion onto Tunisian territory.??

You could well be right there, I must have stopped reading after the Eisenhower part and immediately thought of the more well-known leaflet shown in wtid45's link to Falling Leaf.

You're too kind Ron :) Although to be fair that are quite a few members of the PsyWar Society that have a greater knowledge of the subject than me. The printed black propaganda is really my key area of expertise.

Whispers of War is a thin one and can easily slip into an overcrowded bookcase. The Black Art is much more weighty and needs some good breathing space and strong support. :)

the operation Torch was a joint British /US landings on NOV 8th '42 in both Morocco and Algeria
the US landings took place at Casablanca - and Oran - while a joint Brits /US force landed at Algiers - with the intention of advancing into Tunisia to meet Gen. Montgomery's 8th Army coming up from the Mareth area of Lybia and El Hamma from Southern Tunisia - a newly landed german army under Gen. Von Ahrnim and winter weather got in the way and the meeting didn;t take place until the spring of '43

    Cheers

That's great, thanks for the scan. Now the annoying thing is I've seen this leaflet very recently but can't think where!

I'm sure I'll have some information about it buried away in my archives somewhere. I'll have a good look through and let you know what I turn up.

At the very least I might have an English translation of it.
