    Hi SDP
    Thanks for your help...
I have just found 'Yann' from Dec 2015, and sent the same message. I assume it's another great grand sibling..

    Hello Norton....
Thank you for any help you have in advance.....
I read your posts ref your Grand father...
    It's all very sad stuff.
You seem to have a lot of info ref the 24th Lancers movements. I can find very little ref to the 6th Dukes in that battle, other then from other regiments diaries touching on them.
The 6th Dukes seem to have been a bit of an embarrassment to the higher echelons... and were disbanded soon after.
Any way no one should be frightened of the truth..

    Hi Neil
How has the research got on? I have just started researching my Great Uncles involvement with the DWR. He was reported kia on 17th June south of Cristot 874.697. He was Lieutenant Gerald Perrior, Royal Fusilier serving with the DWR. He had no direct descendent except his neices and nephews so I am attempting to head accross to France to comemorate the 75th anniversary of his death. All the Perrior males were career soldiers and Gerald was the only death in active service. He served in India pre war, and then on to Africa, Italy and Normandy.

Hi, I don't suppose you know the names of any of the other Sargents in this photo, I'm trying to research my grandad Frederick Cornwall, and unable to find any photos, he was in the 24th lancers from 1940 till his death in September 1944.
    Thank you.

Sorry I can't help re the photo - hopefully Shaun Norton will be along soon - but I guess you may already know that Frederick Cornwall's service number was 319207 and he joined 24th Lancers on 12th March 1941. At the time of D Day I believe he was serving in 3rd Troop B Squadron. He was transferred to 2nd Fife and Forfarshire Yeomanry on 31st July 1944 when 24L disbanded.

There's a chance he could be in one of the pictures shown on this thread....

    1943 - Bridlington - Wings for Victory - Parade

As these were various individuals in "B" Squadron of the 24th Lancers.

Since you have so far been unable to find any photos one hope may be to look for some resemblance to members of your family in individuals there? As quite often such resemblances can be seen generationaly.

Edit : There's is possibly a fair chance too that he was perhaps one of the individuals depicted here...

As those that I think, thus far, are identifiable in it were recorded - as having been in "B" Squadron of the 24th Lancers. Albeit some of "HQ" Squadron may perhaps too be a possibility. There was some reorganisation in Normandy and lots of changes in the field did occur.

Not sure if you found that the tracer card mentioned that prior to the 24th he was in the 9th?

    Regimental-Histories_1936-1945 Bright_401.jpg - 9th/12th Royal Lancers Museum

Sometimes the tracer cards can be a little truncated.

Also, you may or might not have seen the pictures and references here...

Frederick James Cornwall - Oorlogsslachtoffers Gemeente Deurne

    All the best,

    Rm.

Not sure whether it will help directly, but the ORBAT for B Squadron confirms he was Commander of the second (Sergeants) tank in Pip Williams' 3rd Troop.

No I've never been able to find anything else out about the photo not even sure where it was taken although we have had a few possible guesses.

Do you know if Sgt Cornwall was in the army before the war?
If he was then there may possibly be other regimental photographs of him before the war. I have in the past managed to find photographs of my grandad pre war that I'd never seen before whilst he was serving with the 17/21st lancers.
although I am lucky enough to know what he looked like.
However now you've mentioned his name and are looking in the correct places just maybe someone might be able to help but it may take some time

Thank you for your reply, I do believe he was in the 9th lancers and then when the started I believe that the 9th lancers joined the 24th lancers. In July of 1944 he then joined the 2nd fife and forfar yeomanry,
    Regards

Hi Shaun, I was browsing information about the 6th Dukes Of Wellington and came across a thread about your Grandad. I found a mention of his name in "The Polar Bears" by Patrick Delaforce.

"At 6:45 pm seven Tigers were reported on the left flank. Our own A/TK guns had difficulty getting in position and two of our tanks were shot up with HE and Sgt. Sidney Norton was killed"

There is quite a good account of the battle in this book and you could probably place the position as it's implied he was "on the left flank." Which from my understanding would be the eastern side of Parc De Boislande.

I'm unsure if you've come across this information before, I just wanted to send it over as I joined the dots on my own research.

    Many thanks, Adam
