I would have only one concern about this - if it were set up, in effect that section may not be able to be 'moderated' ... how many languages do our admin/mod team speak fluently enough to make sure that nothing was being said contrary to the aims of the site? Even between 'native English speakers' there has been a failure to communicate just exactly what was intended by a comment.

Yes ... good point dbf. It would seem we're getting into the "Ironing out the Kinks" phase of this idea already ... maybe the Admin team could appoint a Mod whose native language is relevant to the thread (an already trusted member of course). Plus, I'm sure there are English speaking members on here already that are fluent in more than one language ??

 

What the 'ell is this? I'm not a native English speaker and if I want to rid and rite in this forum of course I have to do it in some approximation of Ze Kvinn's Englisch, right or no right? Even if speaking I am comparable to a cross between Donald Duck and James Cagney drunk at 4am? The alternative being to open a Portagee sub-forum, but I suppose membership would be rather limited, richtig oder nicht?

We're already 'bi-lingual' Jess ... We in the UK speak "The Queen's English" and everyone else speaks a version of the English language ...:p


I have news for you. I've heard a good many of you commoners speaking, y'all don't sound anything HRM, the Queen. I'm not sure what you call what emanates from a Yorkie's mouth, but it sure ain't the Queen's English.

Plus, you need to specify which Queen you are speaking of. They way I understand it, if you want to hear the Queen's English, Queen Elizabeth the First that is, you need to go to the hills of East Tennessee.

 

As you must know, I write (not talk) English, melted inter American and Irish and letters interchanged with persons of numerous countries, who learn many years ago....

Jeff, I think that you should try 'Yorkie' on Google images. They usually emit a high-pitched 'yap'

Maybe Owen could deal with those that speak exclusively Tractor Driver, I believe he's fluent...

I can't really see the point in a multilingual area.
As Jan's always demonstrated it's perfectly possible to get by, & I've certainly always understood his posts.
If anyone wants to start a thread in another language I wouldn't mind.

Hang in there until online translation is perfected and context-sensitive (bound to happen one day surely?), then we'll really see what the Internerd can do.

In effect, I use in first time translators online, but I use step by step every day minus.....

In the fact, when I answer, I think in english, and for my job -I'm a printingman-, helped with my memory/curiosity, I retained more expressions and spelling who are necesary in my tasks.

And in more ocassions, the instructions of apparatus are better in English than Spanish.

I guess there are pros and cons with this type of initiative. I for one prefer not to debate in my native language due to various reasons. <O:p

1. Books written in English but translated into Danish are often "lost in translation". The majority of quotes which are translated in a ww2 book just sound weird. Therefore I read the books in English so I can debate on forums with the correct translations of various things like ranks, names, quotes and such.<O:p

2. Writing and talking in English is always a good thing when it's not your native language, because if you don't use it that often you tend to forget a lot of the pronunciations and grammar.<O:p

Yeah ... Yeah ... It's all relevant to distance it would seem Jeff. If the starting point is Buckingham Palace, then the further away you get, the more diluted the language until you get as far North as Yorkshire ... That's when the 'subtitles' start.
