Thanks to Drew at Kew I have the war diary for 1944- But i have to say most of it not very understandable! What amazes me is how they knew what they were doing, given all the codes, map refs and messaging that went on. For me it was interesting to find my father not mentioned despite having been attached as an officer from RA. There were also one or two maps , hand drawn maps, and diagrams of how to catch fish, and animals in the jungle, and later, lists of loads of stuff that was taken and weight of equipment allowed on men mules jeeps etc. Generally not an enlightening read, but if anyone wants a look let me know. I was surprised that there was the occasional detail, eg "heard Jap talking nearby" and lots of instructions which must have been impossible to grasp in the heat of battle.....but what do I know?!

I forgot! The really interesting paper was the order of the day for Dec 25th- headed by a cheery robin! and giving the menu and activities, down to every minute! Very curious.

Diaries can be very hit and miss for info and even interest. And then of course you have the state of the writers handwriting to contend with.

In general terms I have found diaries for units at rest or garrisoned far more interesting and informative.

Especially when the Scousers run up against the Jocks........isn't that right Ken??:D
