    51MMO A Very Proud Grandson

    Hi All,

I'm in the process of applying for the service records for my wife's Grandfather, Peter Stanley, who served in the RAF during WW2. There is little knowledge within that side of the family as to what his role actually was in the RAF, but they do know that he served in Burma and they believe that he had something to do with photography. They have an old footlocker of his which has "1813135 LAC Stanley P" stamped on the top along with his home address and these are the details (I'm presuming that was his service number) which I have added to the MOD paperwork.

If there is anyone out there that may be able to offer up any further information/guidance relating to his service whilst I'm awaiting the results of the MOD application, I'd very much appreciate you getting in touch.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Mark

    Hello Mark
I would assume all the detail will be in the service records we cannot guess what he was involved in.
Once you have the records you will build up a true picture of his time in the RAF.When you have them post here and members will be able to assist further.

    regards

    Hi All,

So the service records have arrived...

They confirm that he was a Photographer (‘deemed medically unfit for aircrew duties’). He enlisted in Dec 42, trained at Farnborough by the looks of it and arrived in India (Bombay) in Sept 43, where he was attached to HQ 222 Group. His records state ‘HE’ (home embarkation) in Jul 46 and once home he was sent to RAF West Raynham and then on to 58 Sqn who were at RAF Benson. He was released from service in Jul 47.

I’ve had a good look, but I can’t see anything on his records confirming his medal entitlement. I’m presuming he would have been entitled to something having served in armed forces and spent tine overseas? Any ideas how I could confirm either way?

    Regards,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Blimey, that was a quick turnaround in receiving the MOD papers...!.... good work. Best thing to do is take Tony's advice and post pictures of each of the pages of the service record, there's plenty of folk on here who'll happily try and make sense of them for you re his medal entitlement or anything else.

Ok - will do; thanks Paul - I’ll post them shortly.

I was very surprised about how quickly they came through; they acknowledged receipt of the request and stated that it would take 6-weeks - they’ve comfortably beaten that timeframe!

    Hi,

Re Medal entitlement - his minimum entitlement would be the War Medal.

It doesn’t appear he was in U.K. for a sufficiently long period to earn the award of the Defence Medal but he may have earned it whilst overseas.

An overseas posting to the Indian sub continent does not of itself qualify the individual concerned for the award of the Burma Star - it all depends whether he entered the theatre of operations. Many RAF ground crew wouldn't qualify for the award but their “flying” colleagues would more likely do so as they would have flown into/above the appropriate area.

Your best bet would be to apply to the Medal Office.

    Good Luck

Totally agree with Steve. Minimum entitlement would be the War Medal. I recently helped out a family in a similar situation. RAF LAC performing his duties in India, but not in an area deemed as being in danger of enemy attack, therefore no Burma Star. Apply to the medal office to find out for sure.
