In August an aircraft returning from France landed at a home base, where three bombs which were though to have been released but had remained in the aircraft, became detached on landing. One exploded and the aircraft caught fire. The observer was trapped in the front part of the aircraft. L/Ac. Miller, the driver of the fire tender, took over the rescue operations, cut away the front part of the aircraft and extricated the observer, disregarding the bombs lying nearby. Unfortunately the observer was found to have been killed when the bomb exploded.
