When you say 'casualty lists', I assume you mean dead and wounded? Where can I find these? I would be very interest in these for my research into the 8th Rifle Brigade. All this of course without wanting to distract from the subject of this thread, which is the search for details on J. Robson (3191213).

You, being a relative, got all the details. I, not being a relative to J. Robson, will get a bit less, it seems. Still, I think I will give it a try once I know how to find all information I need to apply: full name and date of birth. Any help on that would be much appreciated!

On the form (part 2), I see only the service number (which I have got) or the date of birth needs to be included. This would help... but still the forename also needs to be included as well as a Death Certificate. I suppose the latter will also contain forename and date of birth. Any ideas on how to obtain it?!

9th Bn DLI also wore red on green shoulder flashes late war+ which would fit in with his medal allocation .

Would be nice to know why B.L. Davis was wrong.

This article on the British Newspaper Archive index page seems relevent

.. battle of the Sicilian 'campaign, so reports Military Correspondent. Among the men who builjt the cairn was Pte J. Robson, of Mellerstain, Gordon. ...

I don't have a full BNA sub to view this.

A memorial cairn on the Primsole Battlefield, Sicilly to 6th, 8th & 9th DLI is mentioned on this webpage. It reports that it was constructed by two sappers, and eleven men from one battalion under the instruction of Capt. J N Wheatley 8th DLI.
    Sicily 1943

On the BNA using Robson & Mellerstain as search words there are many mentions of a Mrs Robson or a Mrs A Robson, winning prizes at the Mellerstain WRI. This seems to be the Scottish Women's Rural Institute. Another link from these articles to Mellerstain House is that Lady Haddington was President of Mellerstain WRI & the house is currently owned by the 14th Earl of Haddington.

We have examples in the DLI collection from late war /post war one of which shows the Polar Bear patch when they were part of 56 Brigade of 9 DLI Bd's with the the full title Durham Light Infantry red on Green titles with the square edge .

As far as the round edge ones being for 16 DLI or 9 DLI Officers i have photos from a 16 DLI veteran , Private who had both the square amd round edge titles !

Just for clarification only 16th DLI officers are mentioned not 9 DLI . :)

What a find that news article is ! The original draft (which I have seen) was by Lieutenant Leslie a 50th Div observer who wrote down the story for distribution to the UK newspapers. Strangely enough despite listing the names and addresses of those who constructed the cairn...theres no Pte J Robson named amongst them ....strange??

Are there any photos of the Primosole cairn (I thought I had seen one in this thread, of a plaque which I assumed was part of it, but can't find it now) and does it still exist?

Where about is the resited memorial? when I was there in 2018 I missed it, but I was exhausted in the heat so didn't really go past the bridge - they are about to start flights from Edinburgh to Catania so I'm considering another trip and don't want to miss again - I've tried google maps/street view but no luck finding it

I think so, looks like its below the modern bridge - its such a long bridge (over a very narrow stretch of water) once you're on it you're limited in what you can see or get to without a lot of walking - I was also unlucky in that I walked on the West side of the bridge, if I'd tried the East I may have seen it.

    Cheers
