I was chatting to my grandfather today who was in the Cameronians and he was telling me a funny story about a fellow soldier who was known only as 'Knocker'. I wanted to try and find out who this soldier was so on searching on the internet came across a mention of a 'Knocker Knox' of the 2nd Cameronians in the book Dunkirk, Fight to the last man. This mention makes me want to find out even more who he was, as apparently he was a "pugnacious boxer" who spurred a colleague on in driving a carrier at a German machine gun post and ran the fleeing Germans over!!! Any ideas how to go about this? Thanks
Funny...Someone sent me a Dunkirk related article today and it mentioned someone called knocker but he was in the Dorsetshire Regiment. It must be a boxing related nickname by the sounds of it.
3245756 Rifleman Thomas Knox 2nd Bttn Cameronians. Knox was the driver of the Bren Carrier that ran over several Germans during the counter attack at Oosteverne, he won the Military Medal for his gallantry that day. He showed exceptional skill and courage in handling his carrier during a local counter attack. When the Bren Gun was hit, and put out of action, he promptly drove his carrier at a party of enemy troops and scattered them. He chased and is known to have actually run-over several of the enemy."
