  1. How much use would Dad make of the lines he helped lay and maintain? other than checking they were working ok, he wouldnt use them would he? I know he listened in on the Battles.

  2. Hello Tom, how close (in miles) were you to the NZ Div?

  3. I have been looking at a few other posts on different threads. They talk about some people not giving anything back. I have dads war diary and some photos. Would you be interested to see them? I dont know how to put anything on though.

Sometimes soldiers who haven't died are mentioned in the Official Histories, just really a matter of luck if your Father is mentioned by name.

I'm based in Wellington and have had an interest in the Second World War since I was young. My current primary area of research is my Great Great Uncle who served with 23rd Battalion, 2NZEF and died of wounds in September 1941 in North Africa. I am currently writing a blog about him here http://hopingthewindisstrongenough.blogspot.co.nz/

Personally, I would be very interested to see your Dad's diary and photos. The best way to put them up would be to scan them or take a photo of them and attach them when you reply.

When you want to reply to a post click the more reply options button and you will see a bit below the text box a title of 'attach files'. Click choose file and find the scan/photo of your the thing you want to upload from where it is stored on your computer. Then click 'attach this file'. When you have finished writing your message in the text box click add reply and the message will post with the files you selected attached to it.

This makes for great reading, I live in Trentham and work at New Zealand Defence Force Archives which is the repository for ex servicemen's service records.

If you dont already have it we can provide you with a copy of your father's service records and some help with deciphering them.

    Let me know.

the next six months hoping to meet some of my cousins in the Kiwis but no luck we were all very busy at the time -finally caught
up with them in the early 90's on visit to NZ…

  11. Thank you Tom. Have you looked at the portion of Dads diary I have put on page 1? Jenny

  12. Thank you so much Dave. Those last letters he sent have so much in them. Also, I do have dads files but am finding them a little hard to understand in places.

Once again thank you for sharing Jenny. I found the diary entries fascinating, particular the bits about learning from the old hands and your Dad's thoughts on the poor guys who had the misfortune of dying of natural causes or misadventure in a war zone.

There are many knowledgeable people on the forum and if you post a photo or explain which part of you Dad's records you are having trouble with I am sure someone will be able to help :)
