Hello im new to this so not sure if this site is going to help me. I am a University student at Brighton and in my Third year. I am doing my dissertation on differing aspects of today compared to World War Two. My topics cover food, clothing, health and well being and how all this affects wartime peoples attitudes and general people of today. I need to do some interviews on people who have experienced the war but unfortunately do not know many people who can help me. I need to learn about their experiences and how they coped so wondered whether their would be anyone willing to talk to me so i can conduct an interview and gather the information that i need. Thanks katie.
Katie, There are lots of resource around but perhaps if you post a questionare we could ask the veterans that frequent this site to answer your questions
Hi Katie, I would suggest you begin by visiting your local branch of the Royal British Legion as a good hunting ground. I also know the Eastbourne Herald is conducting 'interviews' along similar lines for a feature coming up on WW2 60th Commemorations. Perhaps you could drop them a line and also the Argus / Sussex Express, I'm sure they may have some leads. Also you may want to consider going to the following I am aware of as a local chap which I have copied from the veterans agency: May 8th Title: 60th VE Day Commemoration Concert Description: The Johnny Spice Swing Orchestra and singers will be giving an open-air concert performing tunes made famous by Glen Miller,Vera Lynn and other 1940s popular musicians and singers.Johnny himself a Normandy Veteran was seen by many when he played his saxophone to the crowds at Arrowmanche during the D-Day celebrations last june.Still a great player at 82.This event will be a light-hearted entertainment but medals may be worn to give atmosphere to the occasion. There will be a solemn pause during the afternoon to remember those who didi not return.Mention will also be made of Major James Howe MBE,formerlt Director of Music Scotts Guards, recently deceased.Major Jim as he was known to all enjoyed playing with Johnnys Swing Band until shortly before he died. Venue: Eastbourne Bandstand,Grand Parade,Eastbourne,East Sussex Start Time: 15:00 Finish Time: 16:30 Attendance Information: Any Veterans and Partners,Widows and Widowers,Ex-Servicemen/women Organiser: Pam Spice for Eastbourne Seafront Manager Contact: 01323 735057 : pamandjohn@lineone.net and on July 2nd in Brighton, Title: County Victory Celebrations Description: County victory Celebrations Venue: Preston Park Brighton Attendance Information: All Welcome contact organiser for info Organiser: RBL / Brighton & Hove City Council Contact: 01273 770663 You will find plenty of willing volunteers here, just go and talk to them Cheers Ryan
