I know that this is one of the best Bolt-Action rifles in the world. Does anyone have any info on the different kinds of K98s, like sniper rifles, engineering rifles, any more info on this rifle would be helpfull. Im think about buying a K98, but i dont know whats out there.
I've got details on the G98, the K98a, the K98b, the K98k along with other very similar rifles in German Army usage such as the Puska M24B, Czech vz.24, the Polish K wz.29, the G29/40, the G98/40 and the G33/40. All these are extremely similar in looks ,some are different calibre, and all were used at some point or other by German troops. (By the way ,the "standard German Army issue was the K98k version). Anything specific you want looking up, just ask. B.
The K98 was a late 19th century design, influenced by the same factors which let to the introduction of the Lee Enfield and the M1903 Springfield. Like the Lee Enfield, it went through a series of redesigns, one of which was shortening the barrel length, so that by WWII the K98k (carbine) version was pretty much standard. The bolt action was not as quick as the Lee Enfield (for a trained soldier that is) and it had a smaller magazine capacity (5 to the Lee Enfield's 10) and I believe that the Lee enfield was a superior military weapon. But it is generally acknowledged that the Mauser design makes a superior hunting weapon and many were converted for this purpose after WWII. In military terms, I don't think there is much to choose between the K98 and the M1903.
Originally posted by Danmark@May 21 2004, 09:49 AM Im looking for info on the K98s used by the Gebirsjager troops and the K98K. The Kar.98k was put into production in 1935 in Germany (though as early as 1924 in Belgium and elsewhere). As you probably know , the "k" stands for "kurz" - the weapon length, not to be confused with the "kurz" round). Many 1000's of Kar.98k's were produced in Germany, then Belgium and Czechoslavakia upto 1945, leading to many variations in weights, lengths and furniture (eg, late production models had no bayonet lug). Several rifle grenades could be fired from this rifle and there were such accessories as the "winter trigger" enabling it to be fired wearing thick gloves/mittens. The Kar.98k's only real drawback was it's 5 round capacity magazine. Gebirgsjager would have been issued with the standard Kar.98k, but they were also specifically issued with the (very similar looking) Gew.33/40 which was originally a Czech design (known as the Kar.vz.33). The vz.33 had some production changes after the German take-over, reducing the weight of this rifle. A metal plate was also added to the right of the butt so that it could be used as a climbing aid for mountain troops. Some (few) were also issued to Fallshirmjager, but these had a hinged stock. The Gew.33/40 had a powerful recoil and produced a great deal of muzzle flash. B.
I've got a nice little G33/41 Luftwaff/Gebirgsjäger rifle. It's a dream to shoot. Here are a couple of pics the first the rifle butt with the protective butt plate. here is the second pic showing the markings on the receiver........... last but not least the profile of the G33/40 rifle and my WW 1 Beholla and WW-2 P-38 with the holsters........great weapons to take to the local gun range here in the US. I will also show the markings on my 98 karabiner in the next post, which I am refurbishing 98K markings, 1942 rifle
