My old friend Ron Goldstein usually comes to my home at least once a week and we spin a few yarns to each other and he tries to teach me computing. For some years now he's been nagging me to post a few stories while I remember them and I've finally got around to doing this. Story number one goes as follows: The time was early September 1943 and we had just crossed over from Sicily into Italy. For some unknown reason I had been told to ride on the water cart as "shotgun" when suddenly, on my left, I noticed a group of Italian soldiers running towards the truck one of whom was carrying an Italian flag. I pointed my rifle towards them at which they all stuck their hands in the air and shouted "Non spara ! Adesso sono Allieati !" or in other words "Don't shoot.... we are now Allies !" I pointed out to them that there was no room for them on the water truck and suggested that they surrender to the driver of the 3 Tonner that was following us. I still have the flag
Welcome Larry - it is nice to have another WW2 Veteran here. Did you serve in the same unit as Ron? I look forward to your posts on Italy - there are many of us here interested in that campaign. My father - still going strong at nearly 90 - was at Anzio, on the Gothic Line and at the Po.
:welcome3: to WW2talk Larry. Them Italians sure were lucky not to have been shot. As Paul said, it's always nice to have another vet onboard. Looking forward to hearing more stories about your service.

Larry Larry - added a 78th Division flash as your avatar... hope you approve? You can always remove it or change it at a later stage via your user control panel. We must have the greatest gathering of Battle Axe veterans on the net here!
Gents Safely back at my own computer I am glad to see that Larry has got a royal welcome from one and all. While at his computer I did note that he was unable to post an image ( probably due to a probationary period ?) but I've no doubt this will sort itself out in due course. I've been his press agent for so long now that I'm quite looking forward to him posting his own memories but I'm in no doubt that in future when I visit him he will have a backlog of stuff that he will want to share with all on this site. His diaries have been beautifully kept and are well worth being opened up to a wider circle of viewers. Just to finish his first story, this is his Italian flag.
I've promoted him to Veteran from Recruit , Ron. That's why he couldn't post images. I was trying to find your post of him with his flag and in doing so high-lighted a few threads you mentioned him in.
Hello Larry, I look forward to hearing about more of your exploits. My father, ex IG, isn't keen at all on using a computer and he's a year younger than Ron, almost to the day! Regards, Diane
Hello Larry and as we say in Ireland "Cead Mile Failte" which means A Hundred Thousand Welcomes to you!!! Nice to have you here with us.
A warm welcome Larry, Hope you enjoy your time here. (And as for the flag... what a souvenir!) Cheers, Adam.
Larry, Welcome to the forum and glad that another Veteran is posting. Always good to hear stories from Italy. Regards Tom
