My daughter (late 30's) was asked by a workmate what was she reading. It happened to be a book about the formation of the SS. The workmate (early 40's) did not know who or what this organisation was but had the cheek to tell my daughter. 'You do read a lot of rubbish don't you?' This, from a women who reads all the celebrity magazines such as 'Hello' etc. My daughter just laughed and carried on reading.
The name Professor Eric Laithwaite was mentioned on the radio today - he was a very enthusiastic teacher the Christmas Lectures from the RI were a favourite Click on youtube on screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWiYsRi2Dss
Sunday morning - everyday I leave the house just before 0500hrs and jog a mile or so to pick up newspapers, two for older folk in the avenue. Arrived to a blacked out shop and a gaggle of taxi drivers grumbling. Not a fan of lateness myself, back home and tried three more times until at 0730hrs the petrol station opened and I got my papers there - on my way back the owner of the newsagents pulled up and informed me that the guy who opens for him on Sundays had been attacked on leaving his flat at 0430hrs and was 'in a bad way' in hospital - pronounced dead later. Two arrested for murder. The local talk is that he lived above a shop and the two may have thought he had access to it and beat him to gain entry. We shall see. 35 year old cheerful lad a hard working father.
Your reaction to this video will depend partly or even largely upon your age. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f6xd2Dlg0Tw At the age of 90, I found this tale of youngsters dealing with a pre-mobile phone most entertaining. Your comments please ? Ron
This was the London of 1942, the year I was called up and full of troops of all nationalities having a break. Despite the plummy tones of the film's commentator it paints a picture of the London I knew. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkyepC6efig Ron

Google search results to the Financial Times seems to bypass the paywall. However if you save the link it goes to the paywall screen. Not sure if it works with The Times, or why this happens. Don't think it is a cache version. If you enter a search string known to be in the FT article it seems to work! (for now)

I can't really see the point of opening a new thread, so this goes in here. I'm busy as an anthill with my new project as discussed elsewhere so I don't have much time to drop by here in the pub, Anyway, looking up on the feasability of the Horten 229 I stumbled upon this gem: Reimar Horten told us that prior to the first flights of Scheidhauer on the H VII, his brother Walter had supervised the CG’ing of the aircraft and mistakenly put ballast in the nose because the measurements were made with a steel tape with 10 cm missing from the end. Reality does overtake fiction Oh, and I'm going ahead with the B.P.Defiant after all!
