I will take a look when I get home Erich.the book by Karl Kossel you mention is on a longer finger at the moment. Chris Gross's book is well worth buying and is now out in soft back.
another book I'm am trying to hunt down is : Kurowski's "Seekreig aus der Luft" the book mentions and covers in short form from what I understand the building up of FAGr 5. was in conversation with Kössler sometime ago about his book "Dessauer", well it is long OOP and will not be published in English.......which it should !
Way back when I got these first I contacted KK , not sure how to be honest his view was that his book which was in the end stages of preparation for publishing would be useful to me. I really should make the effort to get hold of it , but as is often the case you can't buy everything . I find what I have of Kurowski's to be almost too brief and a bit potted in nature. (Two of his books on Rk holders in the DAK and the U-Boat Arm. the latter was disappointing , both in terms of information and in quality of production, just my 2d.).
would tend to agree with your latter statements about his RK holder books - yes too brief, a simple page and a terrible photo. back to FAGr 5: from the inception-operations in November of 1943 till August 12, 1944 the unit performed 191 missions in which it ID'd 20 convoys but in that sphere lost some 9 Ju 290A's and 91 Offiziers and men.
From Chris Goss's "Bloody Biscay". An Intelligence Report on the role of "Fliegerfuhrer Atlantik. This makes interesting reading. Amazon.co.uk: Bloody Biscay: Books Very good value for money.

Erich , this is a unit I will have to learn a bit more about , I have come across them in other books but specifically speaking its one I could do with knowing more about, from what you have said to date a unit with a history behind it. Thinking about St. Angelo and near calls. The account from Donnie Macfarlane regarding the near crash landing of a 1653 HCU Halifax on the flarepath at Castle Archdale. Bill Parker a man with a lot of lfying hours behind him told me about a "Wellington" which was lost , "he came back her and crashed out there on the flare path , thought it was a run way". As ever fact and fiction get mixed up - this is the what actually happened , on being posted to 158 Donnie's crew made several trips in "Friday the 13th" - 158's old war horse .

Interesting to note that the JU 290 lacked the proper de-icing equipment for long-range missions. I assume that this was corrected at some point.
yes have the copy of the original in y files, a FAGr 5 bird, let me didg up an original from my files as I think it is the full profile view of this crate.
Gotthard cannot find the image........rats Sky please post your book sources if you would so we do not break copyright laws, I have both these pics from a book by H. N. E `
No problem Erich. But to me she is a really beautiful aircraft indeed. A pity that none survive to this day.

Monogram Aviation " a study of the ju 290" by Thomas Hitchcock. These from "Air war over the atlantic" by Manfred Griehl.
Robert, Manfred Griehl produces some good reading and one of my favourite books "Luftwaffe Album" was co produced by him. Regards Tom
Yeah, the A-8 is certainly the ugliest of 'em. I notice that Revell do a JU290 in 1/72 scale. Would love to have a crack at that model.
