I would like any information possible on my Father Joseph Alec Wells 6 Commando 101 troop had been in 5 Independent Company and The Royal Engineers. Dad known as both Joe and Alec was in no 6 from 1940 till 1943 went on the Vaagso raid and also Claymore but never really spoke about the War. He was commissioned in 1943 into The Beds and Herts Regt, and no records seem to exist. :poppy: Please help if you can I would just like to know:poppy:

Good luck with your search. I had a look to see what I could find in the newspaper archives but don't think this article is about your Joseph Wells at all.

It's an interesting article for anybody interested in Tobruk and Royal Army Ordnance Corps though. This Joseph Wells is age 32 and the son of Mr & Mrs J. Wells, 4 Fleet Crescent, Belper.

Article is from the Derby Daily Telegraph 6th July 1942

    Hello Son,

Do you have your father's service records? These should provide a lot of the answers you are seeking!

From what you say here and on The Wartime Memories Project site, it looks like he would have served as an Officer with the 2nd Bn Beds & Herts; which was the only Beds & Herts battalion that saw service in, both, the Italian Campaign and the liberation of Greece.

    Best,

    Steve.

    Son.

If your father was in 2 Beds & Herts then he would have participated in the Battalion's action on the Rapido during the Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino. The Battalion was part of 10 Infantry Brigade whose task it was to secure the 'Amazon' crossing that has been immortalised in Terence Cuneo's superb oil painting.

Working with 2 DCLI and 1/6 East Surreys, the Battalion was the spearhead of 4 British Infantry Division break into the Liri valley on 11-12 May 44. Their magnificent achievement is commemorated with a memorial on King's Street at Cassino.
