    Jojo Rabbit
Films lookahead: 20 movies not to miss in 2020

"Up until now, the Hitler Youth hasn't exactly been fertile ground for knockabout comedy. But all that's about to change.

For that we have Kiwi film-maker Taika Waititi to thank. Not only does he write and direct Jojo Rabbit, but he also appears in this boldly playful satire.

Set in Germany during World War Two, the film tells of a devoted young Nazi (Roman Griffin Davis) who comes to question his beliefs after befriending the Jewish girl his mother is hiding in their attic.

Waititi plays his imaginary friend Adolf, a caricature of the Fuhrer as outlandish as everything else in this subversive critique of mass indoctrination."

Saw this tonight , comedy ?

Uncomfortable , Anne Frank crossed with Hitler Youth style Beatlemania ? Even had "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand" by The Beatles as its title track .
Not a comedy (only my opinion) not a subject to laugh about irrespective of the explainations and high level reviews in the press......cannot describe it really I go to a comedy to laugh not to look too deeply into hidden meanings.
I am far from being a supporter of modern `PC values` but a movie which has kids discussing `Jews with horns` `Jews controlled by the devil` `Jews who control people with their thoughts and hang upside down from the ceiling..really ? Try speaking in public on the phrases used and see how long it takes for someone to call you a racist . Definately uncomfortable ...

Son said he didn't like the fact the MG42 didn't sound right. It's rate of fire was too slow.

    Sounds like something I'd say.

I like Waititi. 'What We Do In The Shadows' a favourite film.
Might have to make the effort for a rare trip to the flicks.

    With Antonia Quirke.

Actor/director Taika Waititi talks about his World War II drama Jojo Rabbit and what it was like to direct a film dressed as Adolf Hitler.

In the finale of Pitch Battle, Lizzie Francke of the BFI and development consultant Rowan Woods decide which of the final three pitches is their absolute favourite. The battle is between a memoir of the Beat generation, a time slip love story, and a science fiction thriller in which Britain is waterlogged and populated by mutant dogs.

Taika Waititi’s new film Jojo Rabbit is a satire about a 10-year-old budding Nazi who falls under the spell of his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, played by the New Zealand writer and director. Jason Solomons reviews the film which also stars Scarlett Johansson, Stephen Merchant and first-time child actor Roman Griffin Davis who has been nominated for a Golden Globe.

Alex Michaelides is the author of The Silent Patient, a twisty thriller that has become the biggest selling fiction debut of 2019 internationally and has been optioned by Brad Pitt’s film company. He discusses his love of Agatha Christie, the influence of psychology and Greek myth on his story, and the silencing of women.

Damage to artworks, photographs and documents from exposure to light is something to which galleries and archivists have to give serious consideration. Samira visits The National Archives at Kew to find out how they measure and assess the fragility of individual works, and speaks to Dr Lora Angelova, Head of Conservation Research, and Conservator Emilie Cloos about how best to protect and display vulnerable artefacts.

My youngest daughter saw Jojo Rabbit the other day, she enjoyed it by all accounts. She has been to see more WW2 related films than me of late (much to my own disgrace), including the Dunkirk and the Darkest Hour.

Just watched this film in my local cinema.

Sometimes a bit overdone (too funny for a serious subject).

    The boy was great.
    Any thoughts?

Too much slap stick and I did not really wanted to laugh.
At present news in Germany is full of horrifying facts about Auschwitz, etc.

I watched it last night on pay to view telly. My whole family was with me and the film raised many questions from them on a range of subjects. I thought there were some very good performances by the cast, especially the boy who played Jojo and the young girl in the loft.

I’m glad I watched it, if only because of the questions it raised from my daughters regarding the holocaust and the Russian soldiers attitude to killing the German home guard regardless of their age and ability to actually fight.

We watched it as a family a couple of nights ago too (the power of Prime). Everyone thought it pretty good, though the boys (16 & 18) seemed to enjoy it more than I.
My only objection was I think the pacing unravelled a bit in the middle, but picked up later.

Child actors are so much better than they used to be. Not a dud performance from the kids, and his happy go lucky little glasses mate stole the show for me.
    "I need a cuddle."
"It's definitely not a good time to be a Nazi."

Anyone that's seen Waititi stuff will expect something a bit strange. Gonna be a Marmite job for most, but I think a reasonably clever comedy-ish treatment of some pretty heavy stuff.

I saw JoJo a few weeks ago.
    It was quite good.
    Well worth paying for.

Funny and Evil (parts of it) at the same time.
At first i was not sure if the Jew hiding in their walls was real or not.
I thought she might be some kind of counter-balance to his imaginary friend that was Hitler.:)
The shot of the kids Mother, hanging in the public square was excellent. There was no mistaking her shoes.

Circa 1945, there was (probably) a paradigm Grand Canyon of difference between a 10 year old and a 16 year old that was far greater than the simple math of their ages.
It was the reason the young protagonists were the ages that they were.

You will not see another movie like this for a long time.;)

I finally saw it and thought it was real good.

I thought it was a Moone Boy style comedy. Definitely not!
