I have been following this with interest and today had a chance to speak with an expert...a gravedigger! I told him a few of the things posted here and he pondered awhile before announcing " I dont know about this military stuff but if both the lads were buried on the same day next to each other then I would think the most practical way would to dig a double width grave and lye them side by side, dig two graves and your centre may collapse as you dig or your undertaker is going to collapse it as he stands on the side to lower in the coffins?"
Practical and possible? Just because its a joint grave doesnt mean its a single with them on top of each other ? I suppose a double width grave is technically one grave ?
