    BBC:
Fans pay tribute to John Lennon

Hundreds of white balloons have been released in John Lennon's home city of Liverpool as music fans around the world mark 25 years since his death.

The former Beatle was shot outside a Manhattan apartment on 8 December 1980 by Mark Chapman, who is serving 20 years to life in a New York prison.

In a newly released interview, Chapman describes his "compulsion" to kill Lennon as "like a runaway train".

25 years on, still a sad loss.

Time does not heal this passing. At All. A truly gifted songwriter. What was sad was that at the time of his death, critics had been criticising him for his lack of output and then he gets cruelly taken from us. :(

An amazing talent. I was a university freshman at the time, and I slept late, having a later class. My mother woke me up and said, "John Lennon was shot and killed." I didn't know who she meant, mumbled, "Sorry to hear that," and went back to sleep. She was devastated.

I walked to school (at NYU), and wondered why Greenwich Village seemed so glum. My first class, Basic Expository Writing aka Bonehead English 101, was convening in the usual tiny room, and all 12 members, including the graduate student who taught it, were sitting silent and gloomy. I wondered what the hell was going on. Someone said, "Now the Beatles will never re-unite!"

Then the light bulb went on in my brain, and I thought, "Ohh....THAT John Lennon!"

When I got to my student newspaper later, I found the troops there just as gloomy, for a different reason...they had sent the paper to the printer five minutes before one of their staff writers called from the Dakota, "Hey, guys, I'm here at the Dakota visiting a friend, and they just wheeled out John Lennon on a gurney. Do I have time to file a story?"

    Nope. o_O

The Beatles, with the Ever out-spoken John Lennon, and the Rolling Stones were two of the very best groups of the 1960s !!
Well in my opinion anyway :pipe: Harold Wilson, earlier today.

I was just about to post the same photo. Sums him up perfectly in my opinion.

And for any Lennon worshippers out there, don't google "John Lennon wife beater". Peace and love didn't extend to his own family.

And don't even get me started on Ringo Starr. No more fan mail, peace and love.
