Hi all Just looking for some feeback re: John Keegan's book, "The Second World War". First is this a good general overview resource re: ww2 and second can any one give me a list of the exact maps in the book. I am interested in ordering a general book on ww2 as I have many on specific battles. Would any of you highly recommend this book, I know Keegan is one of today's more popular historians. Any how appreciate any feedback whatever it maybe. Thanks Blacksheep
The Second World War is a well written overview of the war, IMHO. I'm not saying it's the end-all, but I don't think it will steer you wrong. Keegan is a skilled writer of military history, I particularly enjoyed his book on WWI. Another book you may want to check into (although I have not picked it up myself yet) isThe World War II Desk Reference published by the director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies. Hope that helps, best of luck!
What exactly are you looking for? Do you want an overview of just the military side, just the political side or a bit of both? Do you want to dip in and out or do you want to read the whole lot? I tend to use Gerhad Weinberg's A World At Arms, a Global History of World War Two (Cambridge, 1994) it may be over 1000 pages long but has everything and the kitchen sink included in the narrative. It's bibliography is excellent too.
Hello smc66, I am just looking for feedback from anyone who has read the book, did they like or dislike the book, any reasons they would recommend or not recommend the book. I am looking for a general overview WW2 book, I am aware of a World at Arms but was more interested in Keegan's book. So if any members have read Keegan's book what are their thought's and also does anyone have a list of the maps in this book. Hope this answers your question smc66. Blacksheep
