Recently my wife's grandad passed away,
We have been trying to find out a little more info on his millitry career.

All I know is his full name was John jenkin davies, born in Warrington in 1926.
He served with the scots guards.must of signed up around 1942 ish

Going threw his things we found a cutting from a news paper from the "st valentines day massacre" in Burma.

Just wondering if anyone could help me trace him back or if anyone may of known him.

His furnual is 30th of December in Warrington.

    Many thanks
    Phil.

    Thanks very much for that!

Would I need his regimental number tho? As I'm finding it hard to obtain this now he has passed away. I know myself it's something you never forget but mine isn't written down anywhere so I think it may have gone with him.

I think if you put his date of birth on the form they will find it.

Well I don't know if the Scots guards form is the same as the Army's records but I didn't know my dad's army number so I put his date of birth on it and they managed to find his records.

Welcome to the forum Phil....Just give them a call and say you are interested in obtaining a copy of his service records. They will advise accrdingly.

If he was in the SG its unlikely that anything to Burma is related to him. No Guards Battalions served in the Far East during WW2.

    Cheers

I'm going to look threw his stuff during the holidays and hopefully come up with some more info.

Not as far as I'm aware.

They only served in Africa, Italy and the North West Europe Campaigns.

Have a look in this section of the forum - Diane has posted a wealth of info in there and it should help to get you started. Once you know which battalion he served with you can then consider looking at his units war diaries which will give you more detail about what he and his unit were doing on a day to day basis.

Just a quick reminder that no Guards Bns served in the far east, but guardsmen attached to headquarters did. Many an adjutant, assistant or commander was in fact from the Guards. Alexander for instance, I know late on in the war a few coldstreamers ended up there in administrative roles.

One of the Courts Marshals pages I copied had a Guards RQMS hitting a RSM and Threatening a Major (Those were the charges). Initially I thought it odd he was SEAC according to the area he was being held. Then the attached penny dropped and it all made sense.

I found out he was a "medic" or "stretcher runner"

Seems funny that I only just found this out as I'm ex REME and now work for the ambulance service-seems our careers choices have been very close.
