R225002 Sergeant Alfred Barish Levene had an interesting background. Born in Liverpool 11 December 1915 he was the son of Samuel Montague and Etta Levene. A large family with three sons and six daughters. He had been in the Merchant Navy when his ship docked in Canada, just before hostilities. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on 3 September 1939, transferring over to the RCAF in the UK. He was then sent back to Canada (Draft 4863) for training 26 August 1942, returning to the UK with his Observer's brevet, on 24 May 1943. On 26 October 1943, he was killed on Wellington HE696 at No. 30 OTU while on a practice bombing exercise. On its 4th attempt to land the aircraft crashed into a hangar causing Sgt Levene to be launched forward, breaking his neck.
