I'm currently reading Fighter Squadron Guadalcanal by Max Brand. At one point in the book it discusses about how the Jap army attacked. One thing that was mentioned is a lack of adaptation to the situation. The was a plan that was briefed and thats the plan that was carried out no matter how much the situation changes.

Did the Japanese really not adapt on the battlefield?

There are tales of them in Burma (Admin Box?) repeating the same tactics on the same routes, oblivious to the growing piles of bodies of their mates. It's inevitable that some commanders will keep trying the same thing. It may not have been universal but could have become more common as the war progressed as the more gifted commanders were killed off?

A similar tale from the Chindit 2 stronghold named 'White City'. The Japanese attacked the same point night after night, so much so that the guardians of the block used to burn the bodies off the barbed-wire with their flame throwers in order to reduce the stench. Also USAAF supply drop pilots said that they could navigate their way to the stronghold by the smell of the decomposing Japanese bodies.
