Just been chatting on Facebook about this. Bloody brilliant program. Great trip down memory lane for this 40-something.
It was good wasn't it? The first thing I said when it finished was that I wanted to build an Airfix model. But I've just gave them away to members on this forum....
It was absolutely brilliant, real tv rather than reality tv!!!! & my 11 year old son now wants to build an Airfix Spitfire

I kept wondering how much the chap in Cornwall charged for the 'Kit'; he and his team looked knackered on the day. Now mostly looking forward to the full-size Meccano bridge. James May builds Liverpool bridge out of Meccano - Telegraph
Holy sh1t! But that pilot does look like a lot better than when I started, I was totally surprised when I saw the pilot figure in my Harrier was looking sideways, in the what, late 60s! One of my pet dreams is to restart someday on 1:72 airplanes but old FROGs! As they were: no PEs, no resins, no aftermarkets, no nothing Modern paints and finishing techniques ok, but no w@nky fripperies added I'm getting old, that's what it is!
Thought it was an excellent piece of television - obviously had an effect as Airfix's website crashed last night!
- I did think of the often oddball kit collectors too when he did that, but I've a sneaking feeling they re-released 'heritage' bagged kits recently?
Taking things out of boxes is a James May thing. He did it with a Hornby train in an earler programme last year. He hold the view, as I understand it, that collectors that leave things in boxes are sad - toys are for playing with, model kits are for making. I thought that it was a superb programme; the look of total satisfaction on his face when the Grace Spitfire landed said it all. As for Beyonce... who? Jim
But he OPENED a very old Spitfire kit and took the pilot off the sprue! To quote Monty Python & the Holy Grail. "It's only a model!" Adam is corrrect. Airfix's First Aircraft Kit: The Spitfire BTK The 2003 "50th" anniversary BTK was recreated using the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.Ia from 1979 in blue plastic, a Series 5 stand, plastic bag and a recreation of the header. The pattern number was given as 1216 instead of the original 1316. The instructions did not include any painting instructions, just like the first issue. The decals were changed as well. The flashes had a corner cut off and the underwing roundels were changed from type A1 to A. 2003 "50th" anniversary issue.
I really injoined watching it, one can see how children of today are computer minded, but still can be turn to the other side, like the boy who didn't want to blow up his tank
James May must have been responsible for several generations of people being able to recognise aircraft types. Due I believe to making a good model, which makes you aware of all the details. Well at least it helped me Regards Tom
And also for blowing them up, like I think everybody did, or bringing some ships dwown with a firecracker
And also for blowing them up, like I think everybody did, or bringing some ships dwown with a firecracker Philip, My favourite way of disposing of old model aeroplanes was to hang them from the washing line using fishing line and pop away with my air pistol. Some of the resulting damage looked like pretty realistic Flak damage Regards Tom
I walked past a local model shop on my way to work today. I spied several happy young lads clutching spitfires. I suppose it was not by mistake that the program went out during half-term holidays.
Hi All, Saw this and loved it god does it show how much of a kid we still all are at heart... Anyway didn't he get a go on this too lucky sod... Duxford two seater Spitfire
