    Very good.

Hopefully in addition to this, the DCM citation gives you some idea of the outstanding acts of valour shown by your father and his comrades during this period.

At this time, the ideal follow up for you, although clearly impossible, would be a detailed conversation with your father, and a heartfelt thank you from all of us - that is, if he would wish to talk about his experiences.

    regards,

Dad died in 1977 . I was a late baby so dad was 40 when i arrived and although we got on well enough the age difference didn,t help and by the time i was old enough to be interested he was gone . He told me the nearest he came to being shot was when he was trying to lay a phone cable in a barn which had two half doors [top and bottom]. He bent down to stick one end in the ground but the barn door squeaked and a german soldier machine gunned the top half of the door to smithereens .I laughed at my first post as someone replied about my dad,s health record and said he had caught a sexual transmitted disease . I remember when young my mum shouting at him while arguing - why don,t you go back to your senorita,s so he must have been a bit of a lad .

Yes, perhaps - the veterans of this web site would certainly be able to comment with more authority. That "nearest" recall was probably a very near miss.

My Mum and Dad was 42 when I came along - but I did get the chance to chat at length with my father before he died a couple of years ago at the age of 90. I used to read my father's own story back to him when his health started to deteriorate and he used to say "that's a good story - who wrote it ?"
