James H. Sayfritz is remembered on Coven's war memorial as having died in July 1944. However, the only Sayfritz in CWGC is John Harold Sayfritz, of Bushbury, Wolverhampton, died 29th July 1944. There's about 4 miles between Bushbury and Coven, so are they the same man, and, if so, was his name James or John? SAYFRITZ, JOHN HAROLD Rank: Sapper Service No: 2110860 Date of Death: 29/07/1944 Age: 29 Regiment/Service: Royal Engineers 719 Artisan Works Coy. Grave Reference: Old ground. Row 52. Grave S/1. Cemetery: HEATH TOWN (HOLY TRINITY) CHURCHYARD Additional Information: Husband of F. Sayfritz, of Bushbury, Wolverhampton. Casualty Details
Hello Berenice possible typo by the looks of things. I have seen it on a few memorials South Staffordshire War Memorial Sayfritz John Harold Sapper 2110860 719 Artisan Works Coy. Royal Engineers. Thanks. I thought it likely that they were the same man, although not impossible that they were related.
John Sayfritz in the UK, Army Roll of Honour, 1939-1945 Name: John Sayfritz Given Initials: J H Rank: Sapper Death Date: 29 Jul 1944 Number: 2110860 Birth Place: Wolverhampton Residence: Wolverhampton Branch at Enlistment: Other Corps Theatre of War: United Kingdom Regiment at Death: Royal Engineers Branch at Death: Other Corps There is a death for a James but thats registered in Portsmouth: Name: James H Sayfritz Birth Date: abt 1916 Date of Registration: Sep 1944 Age at Death: 28 Registration district: Portsmouth Inferred County: Hampshire Volume: 2b Page: 598 However there is still room for confusion here and its possible even those building family trees have made errors, or more likely accepted errors that one tree has made and hence just repeated it as there are details as: James Harold Sayfritz Birth: BET Oct AND Dec 1914 (Oct 1914) Death: 29 Jul 1944 - Portsmouth Marriage: 11 Jun 1940 - Wolverhampton Spouse: Fanny Lawley F: Henry Bernard Sayfritz M: Emma Gertrude Peake OK - if I just search for Sayfritz (ie no forenames) then the only result I can find is : Name: John Sayfritz Mother's Maiden Surname: Walsh Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1918 Registration district: Wolverhampton Inferred County: Staffordshire Volume Number: 6b Page Number: 887 the only James birth is Alexander James Sayfritz Feb 1999 Wolverhampton West Midlands So I would guess John is the real name any other is an error - do you agree TD
Do we know where he died?? There also seems quite some discrepancy over his birth date (1914 - 1918) TD
