IWM Audios and stuff

I recently spoke to someone at the IWM about audio files and, as has already been posted in another thread, many have been taken offline for copyright reasons. Only IWM copyright files are currently being put back online, but it will take some time before any of the others will be.

Another thing though is that interviews recorded digitally within the last few years cannot be listened to - even if you visit the IWM - because the software used to record them is not compatible with the IWM's current software.

On the plus side there are plans afoot for the archives to be accessed 7 days a week.

Thanks Rosy, that's useful to know. It was a dissappointment, but not a surprise when the audios suddenly dissappeared. I think IWM didn't think it through before releasing the audios, but of course now everyone feels agrieved at losing them online.

For me it was like being offered free chocolate and then it being snatched back again.:(:(:(

I know exactly what you mean. I also hope the software issues for the other files doesn't mean they are forever lost.

I was last at he IWM about 2 years ago and listened to a couple of the audios in question. They (IWM) were in the middle of digitilizing some of the recordings then and the member of staff I spoke to was concerned about this procedure and it's potential for losing material during that process.

Yesterday at the NA, I was photographing some pages from the WO361 files and to say the pages were on their last legs for legibilty would be an understatement. It is a real dilema now for these establishments, saving documents from further wear and tear, but still making them accessible to you or I. Photographing the files would be a way forward, but incredibly time consuming and expensive.

My advice is get in now to avoid future disappointment.:)

Haha - that's great news. Thanks for letting us know. I'm off to take a look - hopefully a REME interview is available again :)

I was listening to the recordings of a WW1 Veteran I used to know on the IWM site the other night , it was quite emotional hearing his voice again for the first time since 1985.

Just had a similar experience listening to the only survivor from my Granddad's dispersal group in 1943.

Yes some thanks ! Not found many relevant REME files BUT all the audios that were on before they were taken off last year are back on o_O - including a file that was likely not to work because of the software issues.

That's great, I'm going to slowly work through those of interest to me and write up notes.;)

Gosh, where did the day go... I was somewhat pre-occupied with earphones in and fingers typing... ;)

I understand what you are saying, Owen re voices from the grave... Just completed listening to Doc Whyte and events at "Blackpool" ... it must all the more poignant when you know them personally... :poppy:

I've had a similar day, I'm so happy with this new computer and what it can do.:D

I can now edit some of my own audio dictaphone recordings from Burma and maybe now get them online. Just heard some chickens from the village of Namkwin in the background of one of the excerpts.

Can you get a whole reel to play through in one sitting? I have not managed this, it was the only negative of a long and productive afternoon.

Have they gone again or is it just me?

They do not say that the audios have been withdrawn this time, but there is no play button or timer displayed when I view the page.

Can anyone access them at all?

    Thanks

It was fun while it lasted... might just be maintenance stuff...

As per usual I got distracted so didn't finish all that I should have done...
