I was with the 5th Northants who were part of the 11th Brigade of the 78th Division.
We were in the 2nd wave in the battle to break through the Gustav Line, crossing the Rapido on May the 14th and then, as all who were there will know, we had a pretty tough time and what we saw and done, is something we will never forget.

If there are any others who were in the drive up the Liri Valley, it would be great to read what you have to say.

    Hello John,
I know this thread is 3 years old but I've seen you posting again.
Are you planning to go to Italy in May with Paul this year too?
Glad you've come back to the site, nice to have so many Veterans here.
Seem to be quite a few who served in Italy doesn't there?
Would like to here more of your wartime stories.
    Cheers
    Owen.

    Hi John,

Churchills of my regiment the North Irish supported units of the Battle Axe Division many times - in Tunisia, particularly during the battles for the Oued Zarga Mountains and Longstop Hill, and in Italy. Not up the Liri Valley though, at that time we and our fellow units of 25th Tank Brigade supported the Canadians breaking the Hitler Line and the subsequent drive north.

25th TB being independent (as were the other Tank Brigades), additional to the Canadians, supported British, New Zealand, Indian, Jewish, and Italian units (also Commandos and Paratroops) as and when needed - even once in Africa the Americans.

    Cheers, Gerry
