Technically personnel were not to go into an active theatre of war until they were 18. However an operation which was the raison d'etre of a unit, such as Arnhem led to an lot of blind eyes' being turned. This is especially so if it simply meant blagging the way onto a plane close to the depot.

At the other end of the spectrum there are a lot of 40+ yo casualties who shouldn't have been there either. The Arnhem cemeteries also have unit badges and ranks which by rights shouldn't have been near a battlefield - PTI's for example 4073431 WO II (CSM) L Morgan APTC, kia. 24 09 44, Age 38
