Is this his army number?

Hi, I'm new to the site :waves:

I recently sent for my father's (still living!) army records and they came within a couple of weeks. My dad still has his red book - Regular Army Certificate of Service so we had quite a bit of information. I expected the Service Records to have more information but they didn't really, some but not much. Still its nice to have them and of course they were free!

I now want to get my father-in-law's (died 1986) service records. My husband has no clue of his father's army number or regiment. What we do have for him though is a little brown book, Soldier's Record and Pay Book. Folded in each cover is a loose leaf of paper.

The information in the book itself is from 1950 - 1956 in the TA and his number begins, not unnaturally with 'T'. The loose leaf has a different number but also begins with a 'T'. I assumed this T meant Territorial but he wasn't in the TA during the war.

I have attached the page to save explaining it all! Does this mean he was in RASC and the T number IS his army number and that's what I need to apply for the records (which I know is going to take months!)

    Thanks.

Indeed his service number - RASC had the prefixes 'T' (Transport) or 'S' (Supply)

His certificate of Discharge shows 12 years service ending in 1950 including nearly 7 years with the colours so he probably joined the regular army in 1939,perhaps after some TA service and then went on to the territorial reserve when the war ended. He then re-enlisted with the TA in 1950.

The book is his AB64, paybook, a mine of information. T/68092 was his original number. You are correct in noting that his corps was RASC and his rank was Driver. 22520699 is his number upon reenlistment into the TA.

Send both numbers when applying for documents, just be be sure.

    Parmesan.

It looks like he was in North Africa with Eighth Army, moved to Italy and then stayed on as other parts of Eighth Army returned to UK to prepare for D Day in NW Europe.

    Hello and welcome.
Make sure when you apply for his service records that you ask for the FULL records as it seems to me that the records you received for your father were a summary of his records.

If you take a look at my albums there are some of my fathers records on there and they are quite detailed, the sort you would expect to receive.

On his list of WW2 medals etc there is listed the Territorial Efficiency medal which would indicate he did serve with the territorials during the war - only XXX corps and VIII AB went home after Sicily...
    Cheers
