Wooden markers could be claimed by the next of kin; IWGC would even post them. But they never made it widely known, perhaps fearful of the response. The crosses etc that were not claimed we're confined to the bonfire. Some still remained after WW2 but they, too, were later destroyed.

    Hello Chaps,
Thanks very much for your thoughts on the matter,my worry is if these things sell whats to stop someone nipping down the churchyard and loppng the top off one there? With only the badge it would be untraceable and could be sold before anyone noticed it gone.Worrying trend .

Saw some bits of Headstone in my local Cemetary a few years ago , I was a bit shocked at first but was informed that they were replaced by newer headstones [ I checked them out , and it was correct] , these were in a pile of rubble waiting to go to the landfill tip , wether taking them would be stealing , same as taking things out of skips etc. I guess so ! but it's a very emotive subject ! and being in possession of them could misconstrued ! something akin to grave robbing .

There is a offence in UK Law called 'Theft by finding' so technically you could be locked up for picking something up off the floor that did not belong to you.

Ouch, I was not aware of this law. I wonder if we in Canada have something similar. I guess that negates the old "finders keepers, losers weepers". Or "possession is nine tenths of the law".

Got a brother-in-law who digs (utility) holes for a living.
Surprising how often old gravestones are used as hardcore.

Gives him the willies, but I find some of his photos fascinating.
