I am looking for an online resource (or last resort a resource in KEW) which lists where each POW ended up. The US NARA site has a searchable index where you can find the Stalag or Camp where a POW ended up. I am trying to get a list of British POWs that ended up in Rennes Military Hospital (aka Stalag 221, Rennes E.P.S.). I have been compiling some information from the E&E reports but a searchable source would be great.
I would recommend that you contact Oliver Clutton-Brock. As the author of a couple of excellent books about POW's, he is an expert on what's available. Good luck, Marc
I've just tried the POW List on Ancestry, but it won't search without a regiment or a surname. These searches produce all members and camp or all with that surname and camp. I can't get a fix on Rennes or Stalag 221 at all. Steve W.
Findmypast also have an online database. I believe Kew have a some publications available for consultation, which may be these: IWM: Three useful volumes have been reprinted by John Hayward in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum. These are nominal rolls of POWs held in Germany and German Occupied Territories, corrected up to the end of March 1945. Volume one is entitled Prisoners of War: British Army 1939-1945: Alphabetical Nominal Registers (Including Rank, POW Number, Regiment or Corps and Camp Location Details) Listing Over 107,000 British Army Prisoners of War of All Ranks Held in Germany and German Occupied Territories. Volume two covers Armies and Other Land Forces of the British Empire and volume three covers Naval and Air Forces of Great Britain and the Empire.
I think the PoW books Diane mentions are by Savannah Publications. I've added the link but suspect you may get them cheaper on Abebooks etc. Savannah Publications I was looking at getting them myself to use as a resource on here but the forum's PoW expert said that in a lot of cases they aren't that accurate-I think he said they only list the first camp in a lot of cases. Don't quote me on that though Cheers Andy Ps I have ordered books from them before and they deliver an excellent service.
Thanks for the leads. I am still hoping for a search-able reference to find who was at a specific Stalag/Camp. The US NARA POW list is the only one I have found thus far that is search-able and they are maybe 70% accurate.
Oliver Clutton-Brock Oliver knows Kew inside and out, and he has researched the stories of over 10,000 POW's.
