Thanks for the kind words. I am going to share them with the school. We still have an Oakwood Avenue Harry & John WhatsApp Group to keep their story alive and I know your comments will make them feel very proud. We laid a poppy cross at your Dad's comrade's grave alongside the other 16 Irish Guards buried there. Two Hundred children watched with total respect. You could hear a pin drop!

Another Irish Guards 2nd battalion soldier has been brought to my attention by a friend. He was Edward Leavesley (2723012) from Liverpool and he was the tank driver. My friend would love to have more information about him. It looks like his crew were George, Malcolm and Timber? There are some excellent photos that I can share, if you are interested, including one of the initial grave of SM J McRory (MM for action at Market-Garden) who Ed must have known. One photograph is of particular interest as my friend is certain that her Dad said the man at the centre of attraction in the photo was well known. I wonder if you might be able to identify him? Many thanks. Screen Shot 2021-02-17 at 09.31.12.png

    Hi Chris
Of course I'd love to see any photos you can share. Thanks for the offer.

As for SSM McRory, I initially joined this forum to answer an appeal from a relative and to pass on my father's account of the circumstances surrounding his death.

If you wouldn't mind, please post the grave photo on this linked thread which also has a photo of McRory taken from The Armoured Micks:

I recognise the photo of the group of Irish Guardsmen with the Dutchman. It also appeared with a caption in Irish Guards Journal at some point.

A few years back someone else stated that their father was in the group. If I find that post I'll add a link here

Hi dbf. Here are some more photos of Edward Leavesley. I wonder if anyone knows the locations where they were taken. Irish Guards 5[33478] 2.jpg

A few more photographs. The middle one is Edward leaving for a fortnight's leave to the dismay of his comrades! Screen Shot 2021-02-17 at 18.16.27.png Screen Shot 2021-02-17 at 18.14.16.png Screen Shot 2021-02-17 at 18.14.03.png

Come across a couple of photos in a family album of an Irish Guardsman tagged 'Jack Garthwaite'

We believe one of the photos is early WW2, so suspect he should have an Irish Guards Army No, but as of yet we haven't been able to identify it.

The other issue we have, is after trawling through the family tree via Ancestry we cant identify a 'Jack' Garthwaite who would fit the criteria (unless we've missed something obvious). The nearest person we can find that it may be is a Henry Lloyd Garthwaite (1918 to 2004), son of Herbert Henry Garthwaite (1880 to 1971) and Hilda Elliott.

So we're at a bit of a loss, unless Henry Lloyd's name somehow morphed into 'Jack'

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi Scott,
Fraid I have no-one on my lists of that surname. Hopefully someone will eventually get in contact now you've posted details.

Jack could be what he was known as to family and friends. (My father was known by his middle name and a friend of his in his training squad was known as Sean even though his given name was Albert - as per CWGC entry. Could be you've got the right man, just cant prove it.)

I guess it will be impossible to know for sure. Thanks for that info. I hadn't heard of Gummersbach. There is a letter dated July 1946 to him from a lady in Tomsdorf. I'm guessing that he was billeted there.
