I suspected the day would come.

Invision board recently announced that since the launch of invision board 2 which this forum now runs on, they are withdrawing their free forums and stopping support on all other versions.

Anyone that is running an unregistered version such as the great war forum amongst others will need to pay or risk that their board could be comprimised through security loops that will develop as technology advances and the older versions of the board dont.

Its a bit a sad time, there are an awful lot of boards out there using unregistered versions and they will run into trouble soon.

Does that mean the WW1 forum will be illegal if it is "unregistered" - will Invisionboard close them down?

No, all previous free versions will still be useable, but Invision wont support them in any way.

This forum has only been running invision 2 for a couple of months and already I have patched it twice for security fixes.

So without the support the older versions will become seriously flawed within a short time. It really depends how security minded each admin that uses 1.3.x is.

Personally I would not use an usupported version simply due to the future holes that will appear.

Either way it wont be long before those versions become pretty useless.

Probably the best boards in the market at the moment are (in order)

    Vbulletin
    Invision
    phpBB

The first two cost money, only phpBB remains free.

The problem it will now create is that there are limited people out there who will pay for an invision license to continue developing mods for it. At the moment the licensed community is small for Invision, unlike Vbulletin who have one of the internets biggest followings as far as forums go.

We will just need to wait and see how it all develops.

Thanks for that extra info, Lee. I hope they have got themselves organised in the 'other place' - and here we are all grateful you are on the ball!
