    Hi guys

I am finding all of this fascinating and I now have my 14 year old Grandson (and his Mother) interested. RCG, you are a star for providing me with so much insight - I would never have been able to work this all out for myself.

Hi Steve, Yes I would say it is Depot, D can be a bit tricky at times.

Bobbie No problem I enjoy working things out keeps the old grey cells working. :)

I think the answer of being Compulsory transferred to Hamps Regt is this

    Saleno 9th Sept 1943. 5th Battalion Hamps.
5th Battalion had been landed in the wrong place and suffered heavily. A German counter-attack overran ‘B’ Company and the Battalion HQ of 5th Battalion. The 5th Battalion lost 40 men killed and over 300 were wounded or taken prisoner.
The Hampshire Brigade was relieved later in the month. It moved south to Naples and on 16 March 44, they sailed for Egypt, and subsequently moved to Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and back to Egypt. All battalions were brought up to strength, largely from gunners from disbanded Middle-East Anti-Aircraft units who were retrained as infantrymen. On 27 June 44 the 128th Brigade sailed from Alexandria, and subsequently landed in Taranto.

So it would make sense to get as many experienced infantry men as possible to get the battalion back up to strength.
    More later.

RCG, you've helped tremendously, and given me a lot of reading to do! I am going to study all this very assiduously. Thanks so much for all your help! Here is a picture of George.

Is it possible to get copies of his medals?

I noticed this thread while researching my father who was in the 159th Field Ambulance during Operation Torch (I have the regimental records of that period) However in the Official History of the 78th Division it lists the RAMC as you have above in the Order of Battle. I wonder if this is a typographical error and they meant the 159th rather than 152nd? I haven't confirmed where the 152nd were in 1943 but they were attached for much of the war to the 51st Highland Division which makes me think this may be an error? Any help gratefully accepted.
