Y'all probably long ago found this site but I am going to post it for blind Toms like me who have just joined the forum and have not read all the posts from previous years. It appears to be informative, especially to someone like me who knows very little about the British Regiments. Regiments.Org I am still looking for good information on British and Commonwealth uniforms of the period. If any of you know of a good page, ping me on it.
Peter G's Formation Signs page is a good start for the symbols. I've never had much luck with web-based uniform reference either, the best book I've got/seen yet is 'The British Soldier from D-Day to VE-Day' by Jean Bouchery. Which is clear, very well illustrated and concise but only covers Normandy to Berlin, hopefully some later volumes will come out on the other theatres.
