You could try the national archives to see if the unit diary is there

    Glenn, welcome aboard.

Since you're the grandson, you should be able to get his service record from the Public Record Office (National Archives). If you have his Army Service Number and other information, they should be able to pull it for you.

Individual UK service records are held by the Veterans Agency, a branch of the Ministry of Defence. See:

    http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/service_r...ervice_recs.htm

Although most records of the WWI era have been transferred to the NA, the MoD continue to hold all WWII records.

By the way, I doubt that he did actually join up on 3 September 1939. It was a Sunday and the recruiting offices were closed. And you will find that he did not serve the whole war in 8th Army, which was not formed until after the war in North Africa started, but his two compaign stars are consistent with service in 8th Army in these campaigns.

    Glen,

30th LAA were a TA unit from the East Anglia area (with HQ at Ipswich; 117 battery from Debden, Duxford and Bassingbourne; 118 battery from Cranfield, Henlow, Upwood and Wyton; 120 battery from Mildenhall, Honnington and Feltwell).

They went to North Africa in 1941, and were serving with 44th Divison at the battle of El Alamein. They spent most of 1943 in Syria and went to Italy with the 10th Indian Division in March 1944 and were there until the end of the war.
