This is the diary going by CWGC unit details (although I'm not convinced they have it right) WO 171/456 11 Armoured Division. G. 1944 Jan.- Dec.

Jaguar7x7 have you sent off 30 quid for his service records yet as suggested back in 2011 ?

I'm thinking the HQ Sqn wouldn't be part of the 11 Armd Div GS (HQ). I think the HQ Sqn may be part of an actual regiment. Admittedly I'm no expert on all this 1944 malarkey but it just doesn't convince me 100%. Service Records are definitely the way forward for a definitive answer and you may even get to correct CWGC's entry if they are wrong.

Anyone know what cap badge is on the headstone? What armoured regiments were in 11 Armd Div?

    Thanks guys.

Owen, I did phone Glasgow to enquire about the service record but the person I spoke to led me to believe it was unlikely I would find anything of any use. I pointed out that I'd pay the 30 quid if there was any useful information to be had, but her doubts put me off.

I'll try to see if any of my cousins has a photo of his gravestone.

I'll give them another call and ask nicely if they'd take a look at the service record before charging me, but I doubt that they will.

    You're having a laugh.
Anything of use in his service records???
Of course there is. Everything from the colour of his eyes to dates he joined up to units he served with.
Have a look in the Service Records section of the forum to see what info other members have got from their rellies records.

I phoned up today to enquire about the service records. They e-mailed me all the forms I have to fill in and added -

Please note that family interest enquiries may take 12 months to complete. This is because of an unprecedented rise in the volume of urgent welfare enquiries currently being received by this office. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience.

I won't hold my breath then!

I also received an e-mail from National Archives today. It said I only have to log on to their site to retrieve their estimate of the cost for document copies. Unfortunately their system wouldn't allow me to log in today. Another hold-up!

Don't be put off by the 12 month wait - It's a standard reply and some folk on here have been getting them back in a few months lately.

I managed to access the estimate from National Archives for the doc's I'm after. There are 11 pages and they want £1 per page, plus £2 for first class delivery. I don't think that's bad, so I've paid them.
