Any further information would be appreciated.

Need assistance on Who/Where/What/How for this man who is on the Australian Commemorative Roll which is for those "Australians" who died in other Allied Services. If proved not to be "Australian" their names will not be removed from the Commemorative Roll however their details will be updated accordingly.

I have researched the Air Force members but there are many more Land and Sea deaths in a myriad of different forces.

There is not a lot of information on these people that can be accessed easily and I ask your assistance to fill in at least some of the gaps.

Hopefully some relatives may see this thread and add more.

I will make a different thread for each along the way as they may tend to get lost if clumped together.

    Commemorative Roll - J Hendry

    Unit: MV Empire Spring
    Service: Merchant Navy
    Conflict: 1939-1945

Empire Spring SS was a British Cargo Vessel of 6,946 tons built in 1941 for the MOWT and managed by Donaldson Bros & Black. She was powered by a 6 cylinder, 4 stroke oil engine of 490nhp built by J.G.Kincaid, Glasgow. She left the Mersey on February 2nd 1942 in convoy. The convoy broke up on the 15th February and the EMPIRE SPRING went missing, presumed hit by German submarine U-576 and sunk w ith her crew of 42 and five gunners.ref. used Stuart Cameron, clydesite.co.uk

CATAPULT ARMED MERCHANTMEN (CAM-Ships)Ordinary merchant ships fitted with a rocket driven catapult on the forecastle. They carried one Mk1(a) Hurricane with minimum modifications and flown by volunteer RAF pilots, were known as Sea Hurricanes, ‘Catafighters’ or ‘Hurricats’. Quickly put into service in 1941 before the first escort carriers appeared with the aim of driving off or shooting down Germa n bombers and reconnaissance aircraft, particularly Focke Wulf Condors.

Once flown off the pilot usually had to ditch and hope to be picked up, or make for the nearest friendly shore. The first ships were requisitioned for Naval Service as Auxiliary Fighter Catapult Ships and sailed under the White Ensign. Later CAM-ships were merchantmen.ref. used naval-history.net
