Hi, my first post on the forum: Can someone tell me more about the tank? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=783736041674804&set=a.153171734731241.25441.100001152453755&type=1&theater Picture taken at Mol, Belgium (after the war - july 3 1945) In our city there was a drivingschool for tanks and trucks. They also dit tests on German mines. The logo ats the left must belong to the "Dessert Rats". regards, Wim
I know we're looking at the pic at an oblique angle, but it looks quite far off the ground for an Archer? it's also minus running/headlights. Edit: no, the "glacis" is all wrong, and the rear end of the Archer wasn't flat it was in three sections above the glacis. I can't link pics or urls at the min, but if you google on "Archer SPG" images you'll see what I mean! Unless there was a MkII that I'm not aware of?
Hey, here's a thought... This isn't one of the legendary and VERY elusive "Cavalier tanks converted into OP tanks"??? They'd have had a "straight" glacis like that...
Tac signs look more like 22 Armd Bde, 7 Armd Div with the split Bde/AoS sign at right. Something doesn't look right - the nose seems to be level with the tracks and there's no 'depth' to the suspension. The central driving position would tally with a Vally though.
Andreas The black desert rat indicates the 8th Armoured Bde - Really ..? thought they were foxes ..! More like 22nd AB or even 4th AB… Cheers
No - the more I look at it, the more it looks wrong. The '13' looks very continental, so whatever it is, it may have been 'won' by the Desert Rats.
Rick.....I've wondered about that too! But I can't see a dummy vehicle being used for training at that point - after all, by July 1945 there was plenty of the real thing about doing nowt! My NEXT thought was....given the lack of detail down the one side we can see...is - are we looking at some sort of amphibious tracked carrier? Flat sided like a Buffalo or Neptune? But nothing fits there either!
Any thoughts on the name under the vision port - SKY...? And what's the beefy wheeled (?) vehicle behind it?
I'm assuming that's the REAR of the tracked vehicle we're seeing, as the spare wheel is there... Otherwise - I'd thought about the C15TA armoured truck, given the what looks like armoured slats over a radiator...but once again, nothing else about it fits the C15TA Is it the very front of a U.S. halftrack??? Minus the ubiquitous winch/cable drum... EDIT: I think it is - it's taken some front end damage. Of the four armoured slats at the front, the second from the top seems to be damaged and bent down...or rather - it's "closed", but the others aren't.
I'm stumped! The tracks are distinctive and having been all over the shop looking for a match I keep coming back to late valentine. The writing on the front looks like 'Sayeda Bint' - Sayeeda Bint is British Army slang probably meaning to a girl who will go with whoever is around. Could refer to a unit hack, captured kit or a piece of kit transferred between units. Intriguing. Keith
got to be a dummy ! look at the guy stood next to it on the left, the track is well above his head and the side bogies look flat like a painted canvas also the vision port is really thin and why are the tracks hovering off the ground. it looks like a cross between an archer and an lvt. nice job though !
Hi, thanks for all your answers! I also thougt it was a dummy. It seems that there is no "depth" in te picture between the gearwheels... An uncle gave me this pictures. It belonged to an old lady (100 years of age). if i can contact her, maybe i can find the correct answer. I 'll let you know! thanx for all! regards Wim
It's 'tracks' aren't touching the ground. After 'funny shaped Archer with some dimensions a tad off' one does immediately think dummy; either for training, deception or film set. Of the type mounted on another vehicle for a bit of mobility. Unless it's jacked up... Lots of detail in the tracks. Maybe the picture's curve is distorting shape a bit much. Hmmm.
Maybe it is one of these without its turret? http://spotlights.fold3.com/2013/11/29/an-army-of-deception/
Dave, if you look very carefully there IS a turret on it - with a British Army tanker in a beret poking out of it!
