I'm looking for info about my grandfather. I know he served in the Northamptonshire Regiment 2nd Battalion and was injured in Italy. are there any rescores that I can find any info or maybe personal records?

(I've looked in "forces war records" and found basic info)

    Thank you

    Hi Yaron

    Welcome

The place that you have already tried to find information is as you have found out titled incorrectly. The one and only place to find service records of those that were in the war is from the MOD and the link is Requests for personal data and service records: a detailed guide - GOV.UK

There are members on here who specialise in Italy, but it would be more efficient to have copies of his service records, that way it is 100% guaranteed known where he was and when

    Hello and welcome
In the meantime, once you've sent off for his Service Records from the MoD as per TD's post above, try and put together all that the family think they know about him, what he might have said, how and where he was injured (do you mean wounded, as in enemy action, or injured as by accident?) photo's, medals and anything else he had, collected or kept about his Army life.
Also check that you aren't accidentally automatically renewing your FWR subscription, by unchecking the box on your account.

There also might be something of interest in this previous thread 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment ww2

(always worth a Search, Googling etc) You know his name - we don't!

Rich Payne should have a bit of info. His Grandad was the RSM.

HI Yaron, welcome to the Forum and good luck, if you need any translations from German to English, let me know. Some of these records in Italy camps are in old style German.

Hi Yaron - just out of interest, do you have any dates relating to when he was injured and what was his name? I have a few names of 2NN men injured in 1943 whose names were noted in the war diary. I would be happy to take a look for you.

    Yaron.

I have a lot of information on 2 NORTHANTS at the crossing of the Garigliano in Jan 44 and their time at Anzio Feb-May 44.

If you find that he was wounded during those two periods, I may be able to help.

    Regards

    Frank

'Other Ranks' (non-officers) are rarely mentioned in war diaries but it is possible. What was his name ? I have copies of the two Regimental histories and I believe most of the battalion war diaries on a hard drive somewhere. Do you know when he joined up ?

Hi sorry this is not directly related, but did not know how to start a new conversation. I too am tracing my grandads footsteps during the war. I understand 2nd battalion northamptons as part of 17th infantry brigade were transfered to northwest europe as part of 21st army group after italy campaign (feel free to corect me if im wrong) can anyone tell me where exactly they went? and where they were when the war ended? my grandads name was Aurthr richard snape (dick) lance corporal at the end of the war. He talked about meeting the russian army all drunk and gun ho. Any info about the 2nd battalion northants would be gratfully received. Thanks

    Kim.

5 Infantry Division were indeed withdrawn from Italy and sent to NW Europe.

It was one of the reasons that they acquired the 'Globetrotters' nickname.

Kim, there may be an entry for your grandfather in the Army Casualty Lists as follows:

    Casualty List 227 Dated 10 June 1940
Expeditionary Forces / France / Wounded
    2nd Bn The Northamptonshire regiment
5882736 Snape Pte AR Date [of casualty] not reported

    Casualty List 859 Dated 25 June 1942
Expeditionary Forces / Madagascar / Wounded
    2nd Bn Northamptonshire regiment
5882736 Snape L/Cpl AR Date of casualty 5/7.5.42

You should send away for his service records to ensure it is the correct person and to get full details of when and where he served.
Get a copy of military service records

Once you have them people around here will help you to interpret them. Good luck.

Thank you most helpful! Yes I’ve just asked my father to apply for them.
Hopfully they won’t blow to many holes in the research I’ve done. And yes that is defo him above.

Kim, whilst the casualty details look very likely I should have mentioned that you do not need any military details (ie service number) to apply for service records. Am I correct in saying that your grandfather was born 1913 and died 1988? If so you will need a date of birth and a copy of the death certificate.
