Ummm! National Savings and Investments. Don't get me going....have you seen their Interest Rates come mid-November?
In a way we already are when interest rates are less than inflation. Pity those who have no occupational pension (all sorts of reasons for that) but have done the right thing and saved hard but are now relying on their savings interest to top up a basic state pension. It's always the Savers who pay the bills, never it appears those who have been profligate. Sounds like a rant - possibly it is!
It's true. My Dad retired early back in 1990. He got a decent work pension and a golden handshake, but it was his savings (rates between 6-10%) that eased him through to the start of his state pension and made life very comfortable. I'm around the same age now with probably a greater amount of savings behind me than he did, but they would not fund any early retirement for me. I've dropped to a four-day week instead as compensation.
