The strange occurrence of two 27 OTU Wellington aircraft both crewed by Australians on Non Operational Flights over the North Sea, lost without a trace within hours of each other.

Both crews are remembered on the Air Forces Memorial to the Missing, Runnymede, Surrey, UK.

    Howdy,

I'll be travelling on Saturday, so I'll take the opportunity to post this before I leave:

    September 7, 1941

Sgt Ivor Roderick FRASER, 144 Sqn RAF
    KIA, Berlin

Sgt FRASER was the AIr Gunner on my father's Hampden, which was detailed to bomb Berlin. Immediately after dropping their bombs, the aircraft was hit by flak and badly damaged. Unsure as to whether the airplane would hold together, my father ordered his crew to abandon the aircraft. The two crew in the rear (Sgt H. THOMPSON and Sgt FRASER) both bailed out, while the Nav (Sgt PAYNE) remained with the aircraft. My father found the plane to be marginally flyable, and turned westwards. But his fuel tanks had been holed, and he ran out of gas near Amsterdam. Performing a flawless belly landing at night, he and PAYNE destroyed the secret bits and set fire to what remained, before heading cross-country. They were both captured the next day, and spent the rest of the war as POWs. Sgt Thompson was also captured and made a POW for the duration, but Sgt FRASER was never found. It was assumed that his parachute did not open. Sgt Ivor Roderick FRASER is remembred on the Runnymede Memorial.

Coincidentally, detailed to take part in the same operation was another 144 Sqn Hampden flown by P/O Reginald John ROAKE. Sadly, he lost an engine immediately after takeoff, and crashed near their base, RAF North Luffenham. All crew (ROAKE, Sgt B. HEMMINGS, Sgt. E. HORTON and Sgt. S. E. TAFT) were killed. P/O ROAKE had been the pilot for my father's first few combat operations when he joined 144 Sqn in April 1941.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

    Marc
