    Summary:

Wellington X3815 took off from RAF Stradishall on the night of 21/22nd September
1942, detailed to carry out a gardening mining operation. Nothing was heard from the
aircraft after take off and it failed to return to base.

    Crew:

RAF Sqn Ldr Paterson, V R DFC Captain (Pilot)
RCAF PO Mitchell; C H (Observer)
RNZAF Sgt G L Otter, (Bomb Aimer)
RAF Flt Sgt E J Rowe, (Wireless Air Gunner)
    RAAF 406683 FO Butcher, R E N (Air Gunner)

The aircraft was attacked by a night fighter at 4000feet before reaching the target area
and crashed. Three of the crew were killed and PO Mitchell and Sgt Otter were POW’s.
Those killed are buried in the Aabenraa Cemetery, Denmark. Aabenraa is a town south
east of Jutland and about 25kms north of the German border.
PO Mitchell later reported “the aircraft was raked from the rear to the front in a sudden
attack by the enemy on the night of 21st September. Butcher’s position in the aircraft
would have made him particularly vulnerable to the enemy fire at the time of the attack.
The plane was washed ashore near Arnum, Denmark.”

    AWM 237 (65) NAA : A705, 166/12/38 Commonwealth War Graves records
    Aircraft Type: Sunderland
    Serial number: JM 710
    Radio call sign:
    Unit: ATTD 204 SQN RAF

    Summary:

Sunderland JM710 crashed at RAF Bathurst on 22nd September 1943, while turning on its
    circuit prior to landing.
In an a Court of Inquiry into the accident, a witness Cpl White, RAF Marine Coxswain
stated “ I was coxswain of Pinnace engaged on flare path duty on 22/9/43. At approx
2100 hours on the same night I was stationed at No 2 flare and the aircraft was
proceeding on a course of 030 degrees to the flare path downwind, and going from the
taxying side of the flare path towards the alighting side of the flare path .I then also
observed the aircraft to commence a turn to port. Whilst completing this turn the aircraft
seemed to fall very quickly, struck the water and burst into flames. Whilst the aircraft
was flying overhead it appeared to be flying normal circuit height.”
In its findings the Court of Inquiry stated ; “ The cause of the accident is obscure. The
aircraft crashed whilst turning on its circuit prior to landing.
A possible cause was that the Pilot with not much night flying experience returned to
RAF Bathurst whilst the weather conditions were not ideal, and the aircraft stalled in its
turn. It was thought that the pilot was about to make his run up the flare path to set the
gyro, as is normal practice, and stalled in the turn.”

    Summary:

On the 25th September 1943, Master AZ609 took off for solo formation flying practice of
about 45 minutes duration. The formation broke up at Sibson drome. PO Davies then
flew close to a Lightning aircraft, which dived away and then climbed up and executed a
roll at the top of its climb. The Pilot of the Lightning then looked down and saw the
Master climbing up steeply and it suddenly went into a spin.
It was considered that the accident was due to “the Master stalling when climbing too
steeply. The Pilot had also engaged in a dog fight with the Lightning in disobedience of
    an order.”

The first Australian to be killed in action was probably Wing Commander Ivan McLeod Cameron, who was serving with Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) at the outbreak of war. Wing Commander Cameron, 110 Squadron RAF, was on a reconnaissance flight over Germany on 28 September 1939 when his Bristol Blenheim bomber, serial N6212, was intercepted and shot down by a German pilot, Feldwebel Klaus Faber, of l/JG I, Luftwaffe. The Blenheim crashed near Kiel, Germany. Wing Commander Cameron is buried at Reichswald Forest Cemetery, Kleve in Germany.

BEALIBA, Sunday. - Relatives of Acting Wing-Commander Ivan McLeod Cameron have received a cable message from the British Ministry that he was reported missing after air operations on Thursday last.

Acting Wing-Commander Cameron, who was appointed to this position In September, 1938, was born at Bealiba in 1908. His father was the late Alexander Cameron, who owned the Bealiba sheep station, and the Rev. D. A. Cameron, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, is an uncle.

Acting Wing-Commander Cameron was educated at the Maryborough High School and Geelong College. After spending several months with the R.A.A.F. in Victoria he left Australia for England in 1927 on a four years' short-term commission in the Royal Air Force. On completion of this term he spent two years with the R.A.F. doing his engineering course, and was then appointed permanently to the R.A.F. He was transferred to Iraq, where he spent two years, then returned to Australia, where he served for three months with a bomber transport squadron. He then returned to Iraq for 12 months, where he was transferred back to England and promoted to Squadron Leader.
