Diane, I nearly fell off my chair, that´s hilarious, I would have loved to have been there at the time:D

Yeah Jimmy, It was the way he said it - and of course, contrary to popular belief, Germans do have a sense of humour. Thank goodness.

Deutsch musik ich schalge vor, Angela Wiedl.
German music I suggest Angel Wiedl, (You tube- 'A Bisserl herzklopfen')

YouTube - Angela Wiedl - A bisserl Herzklopfen

Angela Wiedl - singing 'Wir sehn uns wieder' or as we know it Auld Lang Syne.

The Angela Wiedl song - A bisserl Herklopfen - is better viewed as a video - 'Fritz0151 Angela Wiedl A bisserl Herzkolpfen'.

yes, and you can also see the similarity of single words with the English language...rijd (ride)

It's actually amazing how many words are similar to each other...

German: Ja, ich kenne die Strasse sehr gut, ich fahre jeden Tag dran vorbei!

Dutch: Ja, ik ken deze straat zeer goed. Ik rijd er iedere dag voorbij

Danish: Ja, jeg kender denne vej meget godt. Jeg kører forbi den hver dag

The Scots say Kirk for church, German is Kirche.
They also say ken for know.

I think the Anglo Saxons (Northwest Germany/Southern Danish/Frisian coast) influenced the English language as did the French afterwards (1066: Norman Invasion).

    Church = Kerk (in Dutch)
    'Ceorl' = Kerel

I went to a language school for 2 years in my thirties, and I found it's a language that you have to practise, practise, practise everyday or it will be all gone!

Which is a complete pity due to the ocean of literature on every subject that isn't nor will ever be translated! A few years ago I bought a couple of books on Zinnfiguren and I was totally stumped :(

There is an old saying im my country that goes more or less "An old donkey won't learn languages" and it's true at least concerning this particular donkey :( :( :(

    Miguel,

I was watching a doumentary a few months ago regarding learning a new language and the Professor stated that the older you are the harder it is to get the Grammar correct.

I wish that I could correct my german Grammar as well as I can correct the English grammar homework of the girls:D.

I found out early on that literal translations just do not work out:huh:

A great thread to read through.

It looks like German! But not quite ... Owen the best thing is to read a lot of German books, so many that when asleep you dream in German.

There are a lot of interesting books about WWII in German language.

I'd love to be able to understand ALL of this without having to watch the English language version, which is here.

He's just basically saying that over the decades folks have had too much money to spend on silly cars that have no place to put the shopping in.

    Pah!

I was really annoyed that the DTM went to pay per view, really enjoyed watching them on Motors.tv & at Brand's Hatch in 2006, 07 & 08.

Well we off to Silverstone again in July for F1.
My Mrs is a Nico fan.

    Improving German language skills ?

Sorry................... but couldn't resist adding this item I once posted on the BBC Peoples War site:

Many years ago, I was Production Controller for an offshoot of a large public company and I was based on the 3rd floor of a large building.

The MD, who was on the top floor knew that I spoke a few languages and one day asked me up to his office to do some German translation for him.

Our conversation went something like this.

'Ron, do me a favour, I've got this chap on the phone calling from Zurich. He's placed a large order for some girls tunics and he now wants to modify it. Instead of a Tunic top he wants crossover straps. I want you to tell him its not possible to alter the order at this late stage'

    My reply went as follows:

'Sorry Harold, my German is strictly of the Military kind. If you want me to ask him to come out with his hands up or he'll get a burst up his backside, then I'm your man, but if its to do with girls tunics then I'm sorry but I'll have to pass!

    Ron
